    • Deandra & Ben: Event Bloopers

    • Now, I know this may surprise you, but Deandra and Ben T. aren't always silky smooth operators (in fact, you could argue that they rarely are.)  There's probably a reason why they're responsible for most of the behind-the-scenes duties here at Buffalo.com, after all.  Please watch as Ben T. shows off his 'far-from-immaculate' dancing ability, and Deandra strives repeatedly for a non-awkward video introduction.  Plus, there's a special feature of More Than Me's mid-interview coffee spill.  The 'Great Deandra' has moved on to Syracuse University for graduate school (the prestigious Newhouse School of Communications), and just concluded her time with Buffalo.com.  If you see her about, she loves almonds, wine, and the film "I Love You, Man."

    • Tonawanda Braves Bantam Team head to Championship Game

    • With a final record of seven wins and one loss, the Tonawanda Braves Bantam team packed up their lacrosse gear and made the trip to Allegany for the playoffs.  The team that consists of eighteen very talented young men between the ages of thirteen and fourteen, did not know who their opponent would be.  They only knew it would be the winner of the game just prior to theirs. Coach Cheedy was hopeful, Team Mom Kim was nervous and the fans were excited.  With a flurry of enthusiastic, supportive fans: be they moms, dads, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles or friends – the team set their sights on one thing: victory!  Upon their arrival in the heat of the afternoon, they discovered that their opponent in the playoff game would be the only team that beat them in the regular season:  Allegany – the hometown team!   Although it seemed like the cards were stacking up against the Braves, they forged onto the field like a team heading to battle.  They were determined and focused. Many fans have noted that this team has played like a well-oiled machine throughout the season.  One parent claims: “They won together and lost together.”  Another: “There seem to be no egos getting in the way of their success – just a group of kids who love to play lacrosse and a coach who sets the bar for success.” The first period of play was all Tonawanda as the goals went in one after another…not with ease but with skillful play and execution.  The passes were deliberate and the shots were many.  The game continued through periods two and three the same way.  Although Allegany was a viable opponent, Tonawanda’s defense and the dogged determination of first year goalie, Garret Schultz kept them from scoring even one goal!  Yes!  The Bantams delivered a 15-0 playoff shut out to their fans!!! Goals were scored by:     Ansley Loran-Prangle (1),  Zakk Hayes (4), Gates Abrams (2), Chauncey Hill (1), Larson Sundown (1), Josh Slowinski (1), Lex Oakes (2), and Wynn Blueye (3).  Assists were credited to:   Zakk Hayes, Kyle Barna, Larson Sundown, Wynn Blueye, Gates Abrams, and Garrett Schultz. The team is represented by the following:  Coach Mahlon “Cheedy” Jonathan, Assistants Bryce Thompson and His Dee Hallett, Team Mom Kim Jonathan, Garrett Schultz, Geoffrey Besser, Wyatt Thompson, Hiwa Hallett-Jonathan. Gates Abrams, Chauney Hill, Joey Sarrow, Josh Slowinski, Derreck Andrews, Kyle Barna, Zak McCormick, Zakk Hayes, Lex Oakes, Wynn Blueye, Lee Abrams, Ansley Loran-Prangle, Larson Sundown and CJ Longwell.  Coach Cheedy commented that he is really proud of the guys who have been working real hard at practice, inspite of the ninety degree heat, in the hopes that it will pay off.  He stated that “Each and every individual on this team has played a pivotal role in it’s success with everyone contributing on a regular basis and making each victory possible.” They would like to thank the fans and the parents for their support and invite the public to come cheer them on in the Championship Game at Logan Field on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation on July 31st.

    • Ozomatli 2.jpg

    • Although this isn’t an official proclamation, it must be “cultured music week” here in WNY.  Buffalo Place’s Thursday in the Square will feature Ozomatli, while the Tower Jam Concert Series boasts well-traveled Soulive on Friday.   Who is Ozomatli?  The group takes pride in transcending the Los Angeles music scene.  Although defining the band’s sound – characterized by its website as a “notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga” – leaves one woozy and confused, the band pleases the ears and stimulates the brain.    The seven member, racially-diverse group was originally formed fourteen years ago to play at an area labor protest in L.A., and its political activism persevered.  Educated in cultural traditions through its tours in North Africa, Australia, and Japan, Ozomatli was invited by the U.S. State Department to serve as cultural ambassadors on a series of international tours in 2007.  The band backed American anti-war sentiment and the passion for change; Ozomatli strives for peace and understanding through its lyrics and actions.   Listen for hints of African, Middle Eastern, and Asian music – the band once recorded a song called ‘Arabic Jarocho Dancehall,’ after all – at Lafayette Square on Thursday for week five of TATS.

    • Ingrid photos 2.jpg

    • So, on August 26th, 2009, who do you think earned the top album sold on iTunes?  Was it Kings of Leon with "Only By the Night?"  How about "Breakthrough" by Colbie Caillat?  Erroneous, on both counts. Ingrid Michaelson, who topped the chart last August, will take the Lafayette Square stage this Thursday, fresh off her performance alongside Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, and Kings of Leon at Tennessee's Bonnaroo Festival.  Michaelson will perform hits from her famed album on iTunes, "Everybody," including recent favorite "Maybe."  Expect to hear her most popular tracks - "The Way I Am" off her 2007 album "Girls and Boys," which may sound familiar from an Old Navy commercial, and "Keep Breathing," which featured on the season finale of Grey's Anatomy the same year.  Bonnaroo.com inquired about the meaning behind Michaelson's album; the New York based artist said, "[The album is] almost a loss of innocence. I’m 29 years old and I shouldn’t worry if my mom and dad know that I kissed a boy from listening to one of my songs, but I remember on my first album I was like, 'Can I say that?'"  You can say it, Ingrid, you can say it. Her sound is described as "smart, pensive, yet poppy."  Who knew that "poppy" and "smart" weren't mutually exclusive?  Ingrid must be a real pioneer. Can Michaelson live up to the standard set by Tift Merritt and Alejandro Escovedo last Thursday?  We think so, but we suggest that you see it in person, not only because she's arguably the most attractive woman named Ingrid in the world, but because Buffalo.com will be there to snap your photo (and provide concession tickets!).
