patrick kane at caz park patrick kane caz.jpgPolice say what started as a dispute over pocket change landed South Buffalo native and Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane in big trouble with the law.  Kane and his cousin spent some time in the Erie County Holding Center this weekend and face a number of charges. They allegedly assaulted a 62-year old cab driver early Sunday after the driver told the two young men he didn't have 20 cents in coins to give them their change.  It comes at a critical time for Kane who is a prospect for the U.S. Olympic Team.  What do you think of this story?  Is it a case of a young athlete who made a bad judgment or with a few punches, did this young hockey star damage his chance of going to the Olympics?  Sound off on Buffalo.com.

      Running With Seeds Report 3-11-10

I went for a run this morning. Before I did, I left a message on Facebook about finding pennies. I always find money when I run. My message urged people to give the penny they found to the first person they meet. As they give them the penny, tell them that it is a seed of blessing.

As I ran, I found 2 pennies and a quarter. Each time I gave them away to the first person I met with a “Seed Blessing.” Each person smiled and one guy even chuckled. I love chuckles!

      I smiled and waved a peace sign at almost everybody as I said;

      “Good to see you!

Most of the people smiled and waved. My shirt said “Witness” FCA on the front. On the back it says; “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.” Acts 2:32. The shirt was given to me by some college students. I believe it’s from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

They gave me a seed that I wear.

      Runnning Report 3/12/10

I ran 3.2 miles this morning. I found one penny and gave it to a man who was cleaning the sidewalk. He had plastic gloves on and he held a garbage bag. When I offered him the penny and the seed blessing, he told me to put it into the garbage. I prayed that his garbage bag would provide nourishment for the seed.

Today during one of our in school character education programs, a student told me she found a penny and gave it to a teacher as a seed of blessing. Another student found a penny and gave me a seed of blessing.

Revival - one seed at a time.

Revival - one penny at a time.

Revival - One blessing at a time.

12:26 - Considering it's the second-to-last game of the regular season for the Buffalo Bills, there are more storylines to follow than you would think.  Brian Brohm, snatched off the Green Bay practice squad in mid-November, will make his NFL debut.

Bills' recent signing QB Brian Brohm

12:28 - Expectations for Brohm should be hedged, however; he will take snaps behind a dinged-up offensive line that's allowed the second most sacks in the NFL this season.  Ryan Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards were last Sunday's victims - both suffered ankle injuries as a direct result of New England's heavy pass rush.

12:33 - Brohm certainly possesses the talent to succeed - after all, he still holds the Big East record for passing yardage (career).  Check out Brohm's bio.

12:39 - Not surprisingly, Mike Shanahan has officially turned down the job offer to become the next Bills' head coach.  After Washington hired GM Bruce Allen, a close friend of Shanny's, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the former Broncos' boss would leap at that opening.  I was hoping Sherm Lewis had a chance!

12:42 - While there's no doubt that Buffalo hasn't reached the expectations that accompanied the signing of Terrell Owens, the 7-7 Atlanta Falcons fall into the same category.  Predicted to battle New Orleans to the finish and likely secure a Wild Card spot, injuries to integral players like QB Matt Ryan and RB Michael Turner have led to a disappointing year.

      Atlanta QB Matt Ryan

12:43 - Two bright young stars at linebacker will be featured today - Paul Posluszny of the Bills and Curtis Lofton of the Falcons (128 tackles on the year).

12:48 - I got the feeling from the Buffalo News all week that Perry Fewell was VERY reluctant to start Brohm today - he's assured himself that Ryan Fitzpatrick gives Buffalo the best chance to win.  Only today was Fitz finally declared inactive.

12:49 - This raises two additional thoughts - a) Is Fewell looking out for the young QB, whose confidence is certainly fragile?  After all, Brohm will probably be hit at least ten times today.  Or is this b) another sign that Fewell is dedicated to winning now and not catering to the future?

12:52 - I don't want the Bills to lose by any means, but there's no substitute for live game action to hasten the development of players like James Hardy, Nic Harris, Aaron Maybin, etc - guys who've been largely glued to the inactive list or the bench this year.

12:52 - With Josh Reed inactive due to injury, Hardy finds himself on the active roster for the first time in 2009.  Will he see any snaps, though?

      josh-reed-first-down.jpg

12:53 - Relatively sparse crowd ten minutes before game-time at the Georgia Dome - no surprise since Atlanta has been eliminated from the playoff chase.

12:55 - "There's injuries, then there's the Buffalo Bills." - Steve Beuerlein, CBS color commentator.

12:57 - I doubt Brian Brohm slept last night, and if he did, John Abraham probably played a big role in his dreams.  Not in a weird way, guys.

12:58 - I'm receiving a stronger and stronger vibe that Perry Fewell will be the 2010 head coach in Buffalo.  He'll come cheap, he brings intensity, and the players respect him/are familiar with him.  There are a lot of positives there - he just needs experience as a head coach, something he's gaining now.  Plus, this would solidify the idea that Ralph's claim of spending $10 million on an elite HC was merely a hoax to keep the fan-base interested.

1:02 - Atlanta will be without starting running back Michael Turner today - he's scored ten touchdowns this year despite missing considerable action.

1:03 - Bills will receive first.  Fred Jackson is drilled in the backfield for a loss on the Bills' first play - not a good sign that Brohm will be facing obvious passing situations early.

1:06 - The pocket quickly collapses around Brohm - he's sacked by Babineaux on 3rd and 7.  The big loss on first down didn't help matters.  Moorman to punt from his end zone.  Why is Paul Posluszny playing on special teams?

1:07 - The Falcons take advantage of our banged-up secondary (no McGee or Byrd for the final two games) - Matt Ryan hooks up with Rowdy Roddy White on a 42 yard score - 7-0 Atlanta with 12:48 left in the first.

Star WR Roddy White of Atlanta

1:09 - Not an encouraging sign that Atlanta scores on its first offensive play - great toss by the former Boston College QB, finding his top target in single coverage and allowing him to make a play on the ball.  Reggie Corner was thoroughly overmatched against White.  Roddy's doing flips and...

1:10 - Fred Jackson hasn't made it to the 20 yard line on his first two kickoff returns.  Brohm back under center for his second series, this time facing a seven point deficit.

1:12 - Kirk Chambers, worst starting lineman in the NFL?  Can the Bills top last week's 11 penalties for 124 yards?

1:13 - Can we step aside for a second and be thankful that we just signed Fred Jackson to a four year contract for 'backup caliber' money?

1:14 - The pass rush phases Brohm again and his pass is errant downfield.  Moorman will punt for the second straight possession.

1:14 - Very obvious block in the back against the gunner.  At least try to conceal it!  Falcons will start much deeper in their own territory after the penalty.

1:17 - Florence and Corner are the starting corners for Buffalo, while George Wilson and Donte Whitner open at safety.

      Drayton florence1128.jpg

1:17 - Well-designed play by Atlanta - a delayed draw to Jerious Norwood puts the change-of-pace back in a good position to use his speed and shiftiness.  First down for Jerious.

1:18 - Nic Harris is in the starting defense today too - the rookie from Oklahoma has seen action primarily on special teams so far this year.

1:20 - Setting picks on receiving routes is technically illegal in the NFL, but basically every team gets away with it on plays like that - Ryan to Booker to convert the third and 2.

1:21 - Matty Ice throws the ball away on third and ten, but you have to credit the Bills' coverage on the play - Youboty, Corner, and co. remained disciplined as Buffalo blitzed strong safety Donte Whitner.

1:24 - Brohm completed his first pass from scrimmage, but he's been ducking for cover ever since.  Atlanta's defense has generated plenty of pressure on passing downs.

1:25 - Jackson improvises on second down, bouncing the run all the way to the right sideline for Buffalo's first chain-moving play.

1:26 - Brohm's first deep ball looks pretty - he overthrew the deep ball to Owens down the left sideline.  The former Cardinals' QB showed above-average arm strength and a tight spiral on the deep throw.

      alex van pelt.jpg

1:27 - Jonathan Scott is down on the field - can Jamon Meredith play left tackle - or does Chambers shift there and Meredith plays right tackle?  Either way, Brian Brohm (or AVP, above) can't be thrilled with this.

1:29 - Round of applause for Andre Ramsey - he just played his first NFL snap without committing a false start.

1:30 - Buffalo punts for the third straight series - Jackson kept the legs churning but wound up a yard shy on the third down swing pass.

1:34 - Jason Snelling eludes Chris Kelsay and beats Paul Posluszny to the sideline for a first down.  He's a powerful straight-ahead back with deceptive speed - he lacks the burst and vision of Turner, however.

1:36 - Aaron Schobel comes from behind Ryan and forces the QB to fumble, but Ryan alertly jumps on the ball to maintain possession.  Ryan then throws a strike to Roddy White for 18 yards against Drayton Florence's coverage.

1:37 - Matt Ryan is just toying with the Bills right now - not sure who Ashton Youboty was covering on Booker's catch over the middle.  ATL is at Buffalo's 13 after a strong run from Snelling.  Missed tackle by Aaron Schobel on the play.

1:41 - The Falcons have 140 yards from scrimmage, Buffalo has 27.

1:42 - I've always been a big Ovie Mughelli fan; I'm probably one of about eight people on earth.  Seriously though, the guy opens holes and converts third and short opportunities and takes little credit.  Sick name, too.

1:44 - Scratch that - it turns out that Big Ovie is the man - check out his charity!

1:46 - Roddy White, so excited to beat Reggie Corner, commits a false start penalty.  Can you blame him?  I'd be giddy if I had that opportunity.

      Reggie Corner 1227.jpg

1:46 - Schobel with his second strip-sack of the series - no idea why Atlanta is trying to block him with a tight end.  The false start penalty and personal foul on Tyson Clabo kill the Falcon drive - not a gimme field goal for Matt Bryant, but he nails the 51 yarder.  10-0 Atlanta with 14:24 left before halftime.  The Buffalo D should be content with only allowing three points, as Ryan and the ATL offense botched a first and goal at the 8.

1:50 - T.O.'s personal grooming should not be overlooked - he's been more dedicated to his modeling contract than his football responsibilities, it seems.

1:51 - Nice throw by Brohm to Evans on second down - Brian's pass was to Evans' back shoulder, shielding the ball from the closing cornerback and allowing Evans to adjust at the first down marker.

1:53 - Atlanta, unsure which blitz scheme to choose to unnerve Kirk Chambers, opts to call a timeout.  3rd and 4 at Buffalo's 35.

1:55 - As expected, Brohm can't handle the blitz as Coy Wire (former Bill) drills the second year QB to the ground after Brohm's pass sails over Evans' head.  The Bills are now 0-4 on third down.

1:58 - Think Buffalo's third down futility is embarrassing?  Try being Tampa Bay on December 13th - the Bucs went 0-14 on the penultimate down vs. the Jets.

      Buffalo Bills Logo

2:00 - Kudos to Arian Foster, the Houston Texans' running back.  He fumbled early in the first half last week and was promptly benched - Kubiak stood by his young runner, however, sending a vote of confidence by handing him the start again this week.  Foster this time did not disappoint - he just scored on a 17 yard jaunt to make it 24-0 Houston over Miami.

2:01 - That's the second personal foul penalty on a Falcon offensive lineman in the past two series.  Mike Smith can't be too pleased with these drive-killers.

2:04 - Brian Brohm's bootleg fools no one, but he manages to release the ball quickly and find Corey McIntyre for 8 yards.  Jackson's second down sweep off right tackle moves the chains.  Jackson's helped off the field with some kind of left arm injury.  Shoot.

2:05 - It can't be overstated how much our porous offensive line restricts play-calling.  It seems like every passing play is either a screen or a quick-hitter to the outside.  There's no time for a five step drop or multiple reads.

2:07 - Terrell Owens made no effort to go after the ball on that deep pass that was picked off.  Not a tough interception for Chris Owens - he got the better of the surname.  T.O.'s run lackadaisical routes all year long (as much as he claims he doesn't on Twitter), this isn't something new.

      2:09 - That's Brohm's first NFL interception.

Buffalo Bills' QB Brian Brohm makes his first NFL start

2:09 - Reggie Corner is whistled for illegal contact - Steve Beuerlein credits Corner with a "super job" on committing that foul.  Steve clearly has no faith in Corner's ability - and I'm not sure Reggie himself has a whole lot right now.

2:11 - Corner redeems himself for the penalty by closing quickly on Ryan's 3rd down toss to Jenkins.  Another punt for Atlanta - Koenen's third of the day, and man, he has a strong leg.  Still 10-0 Atlanta, 6:04 left before the half.  Buffalo's special teams is penalized for a block in the back, negating a good return by Roscoe.

2:14 - Nice hitch route by Owens on first down produces a first down for the Bills - Brent Grimes left a lot of cushion for T.O. on that play.

2:15 - Brohm looks a lot more comfortable in the second quarter - he's shown better touch on his throws, and he's been more accurate.  Good to see the youngster settle down - and even convert a 3rd down pass to Lee Evans!  Tack on 15 for roughing the passer!  Let's go Buffalo!

2:16 - T.O. just hauls in the 1,000th reception of his career - the only active player ahead of him is SF's Isaac Bruce.  Owens is in the same conversation as Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, and Marvin Harrison - those are some impressive careers.

      terrell owens 104.jpg

2:20 - Fred Jackson, thrown off by Corey McIntyre's motion, jumps offsides - turning a 3rd and 1 into a more difficult down.  Brohm throws a very catchable pass to Owens on the ensuing play - they're measuring to see if Terrell crossed the marker.  First down!

2:22 - Two minute warning - Buffalo is on the Atlanta side of midfield (the 44) and marching...

2:23 - Two third down conversions on this drive, one each to the Bills' outside receivers, Owens and Evans.

2:27 - Buffalo's Kirk Chambers gets abused on the outside by Kroy Biermann, tearing the defensive end's helmet off in a desperate attempt to keep him from decapitating Brohm.  Altogether a forgettable play for Chambers, and not the audition he wants for a roster spot next year.  Versatility isn't of much value when you play a lot of positions badly.

2:30 - Matt Ryan faces a third and 10 from the ATL 44 yard line - only 27 seconds left before halftime.

2:31 - Illegal contact penalty on Ashton Youboty - a defensive back can't make intentional contact with a receiver beyond five yards downfield.  5 penalties for 25 yards in the first half for Buffalo.

2:33 - Tony Gonzalez limps off the field before Ryan finds Roddy White on a quick out - Matt Bryant will attempt a 55 yarder after making a 51 yarder earlier.

2:34 - An incredibly bizarre play - the field goal is blocked by Spencer Johnson, and Justin Jenkins corrals the ball, flips backward to Reggie Corner, who scoops up the ball and fumbles it intentionally - when he drops it, he's the only one who can recover and advance the football.  George Wilson recovered Corner's fumble and darted into the end zone on a great effort.  It probably won't count, but the play is under review.

      george wilson 1025.jpg

2:40 - Corner is ruled down on the return, and therefore, Wilson's spectacular return is nullified.

      -------------------------------------------------Halftime, 10-0 Atlanta------------------------------------------------

2:44 - Johnson's blocked field goal is Buffalo's first since October 2008 - 6'8 former Bill Langston Walker got his mitts on the previous one.

2:50 - That's the second time this season that the Buffalo offense has been held scoreless in a first half - the first was the Cleveland debacle.

2:52 - The second half is underway - Brohm's halftime stats: 11-18, 86 yards, no touchdowns, 1 interception.  Tony Gonzalez is out for the game with a calf injury.  Atlanta ball to start the 2nd half.

2:55 - Two Bills linebackers blitz on second down, but Atlanta's O-line holds up under pressure, allowing Ryan to hit White for a 33 yard gain.  The Falcons face a 3rd and 9 now.  Sorry for the slow second half updates, the site is operating a little slowly.

2:59 - Aside from two or three blown assignments, Buffalo's banged-up secondary has held up decently.  Matt Ryan's been forced to throw passes away because of good downfield coverage.

      Atlanta QB Matt Ryan

3:00 - Impressive job by Matt Bryant, the usual Falcon kicker, who took over punting duties on the last play because Koenen was hit in the head.  Punters aren't ordinarily the toughest crew.

3:00 - Quick three-and-out by Buffalo's offense - Brohm landed on his back again after Erik Coleman broke up his pass.

3:02 - Ellis Lankster, Buffalo's seventh round pick out of West Virginia, closes well on Ryan's underthrown pass and knocks it away.  Interesting to see the 5'9 Lankster receiving playing time on the outside.

3:04 - Lankster then helps out in run support with Nic Harris - good to see the young guys out there.

3:04 - Schobel's been a beast all day - Aaron's quickness and persistence have permitted him to get to Ryan three times today.

3:05 - Unphased, Matt Ryan hooks up with Roddy White on fourth and ten on the Reggie Wayne-patented runback route.  A little temerity from Mike Smith!

      Ex-Buffalo coach Mike Mularkey

3:06 - Disappointed in myself that I haven't mentioned Mike Mularkey, Atlanta's offensive coordinator and former Bills' head coach, yet.  That's unforgivable.

3:08 - Journeyman wide receiver Marty Booker beats Reggie Corner on a slant route for a 12 yard touchdown.  Booker's not the fleetest of foot, but his size is an advantage in the red zone.  17-0 Falcons with 7:33 left in the third.

3:12 - How sick is Kroy Biermann?  He's tied for the team-lead with five sacks, and he's the 3rd string kicker - forced into duty on the most recent play after Bryant and Koenen exited with injuries.  Biermann's blast was caught by Jackson at the three yard line, sending the Buffalo RB running backwards to retrieve the kickoff.

3:14 - I knew Andre Ramsey's snap count without a penalty was too good to be true - he just picked up his first of the game because he wasn't on the line of scrimmage.

3:15 - Perry Fewell is heated - Lawrence Sidbury just tore the ball out of Fred Jackson's grasp, turned, and pushed the pile all the way into the end zone.  Huge play by the rookie out of Richmond to put this game out of reach.  Matt Bryant returns to drill the extra point - 24-0 Atlanta with 6:06 left in the 3rd.

3:17 - It was just as much of an athletic play by Sidbury as it was poor ball protection by the Bills' feature back.

3:20 - Mother Tsuj, a casual football fan, just chimed in, saying, "I think the Colts can bench their starters and still beat the Bills next weekend."  It's hard to argue with her logic.

3:21 - Brohm has a better combination of accuracy and strength than both Fitzpatrick and Edwards.  He's shown glimpses of starting NFL QB ability - the real test will be developing mentally, making the correct reads and not folding under the pass rush.  Edwards and Losman just looked shell-shocked after awhile; Edwards' career has declined sharply after each concussion.

3:23 - Brohm has connected with three different receivers on this drive that's advanced to the Atlanta 23.  A big 3rd and 4 upcoming.  Corey McIntyre is suddenly relevant again, snagging four passes for 28 yards on the afternoon after catching three the entire season leading up to today.

3:27 - Former Bill Coy Wire breaks up Brohm's pass intended for Owens - Lindell steps up and knocks a 40 yard field goal through the uprights to put Buffalo on the scoreboard.  24-3 Atlanta with 1:58 left in the 3rd.

      Bills' receiving threat Lee Evans

------------------------------------------------End of 3rd Quarter, 24-3 Atlanta---------------------------------------

3:32 - An end around to Eric Weems moves the Falcons closer to midfield to begin the fourth quarter.  Expect a heavy dose of Jason Snelling and a quick fourth quarter after an agonizingly slow first 3/4ths of the game.

3:33 - Good pursuit by Stroud, who wasn't fooled by the end around.  I wonder how many Bills fans are still watching right now (much less reading this blog!).

3:35 - For some reason, Atlanta insists on running end arounds on this drive.  Mularkey opts to go for it on fourth down, and the pass falls incomplete.  They're clearly not scared of the Buffalo offense mounting a comeback.

3:38 - Buffalo, not to be outdone, tries an end around of its own with Terrell Owens.  This is definitely a copy-cat league.  Neither team has been successful at getting to the edge, with the exception of one Eric Weems run.

3:39 - Speaking of Brian Brohm digesting things, Perry Fewell looks rather sick to his stomach right now.

3:40 - Rapidly closing in on ten penalties - Buffalo's committed 9 penalties for 45 yards.  Richie Incognito should open a bar in Buffalo.

Buffalo guard Richie Incognito, signed this week

3:41 - I can't think of a good name for Richie's bar, but we'll have to come up with something besides "Rowdy Richie's Roost" or "Feed the Rage."

3:44 - Jonathan Stewart has eclipsed the 200 yard mark for Carolina today, and the Panthers are steamrolling the hapless Giants 41-9.  Carolina fans are smiling with Jake Delhomme and his $13 million per year chilling on the sidelines.

3:45 - Oh, the Bills are still playing?  Roddy White just made an acrobatic grab along the right sideline, leaping to snare Ryan's pass and maintain two feet in bounds.  Atlanta's at Buffalo's 38 with just under ten minutes remaining.  Mularkey finally has abandoned the 'end-around experiment.'

3:47 - Bill Macatee just brought up Schobel's possible retirement, and who can blame him when he's endured losing season after losing season.  He's played great football today, forcing two fumbles and sacking Ryan three times.

3:49 - Atlanta's fielding a high school offense; with Matt Bryant out with a hamstring injury, kicking a field goal is not an option here.  Ryan throws a bullet for the first down to Michael Jenkins at the Bills' 10.

3:51 - Mercifully, there's only 4:25 left in the game.

3:51 - Roaring Roddy notches his second TD grab of the day - he's demonstrated immaculate footwork along the sideline today.  White's 5 yard score from Ryan increases the Falcon lead to 31-3.  4:22 left.  Obligatory Roddy picture below.

      Emerging Falcon linebacker Curtis Lofton

3:54 - Just kidding!  Curtis Lofton, whose name has not been called yet today (to my knowledge), gets the surprise picture inclusion.

3:55 - Ellis Lankster is the culprit on the block in the back, nullifying a long return by Fred Jackson.  Buffalo has now reached double-digits in penalties for the second straight week.  Why not go for three against Indy?

3:57 - New England may be one of the least inspiring division winners in recent memory - maybe the most inconsistent, at least.  The Pats slaughtered the Jaguars today, 28-7, with Randy Moss contributing three scores.   They've clinched the AFC East title with today's win.

3:58 - Great instincts by Brent Grimes, the ATL cornerback.  He's got five picks on the season and has displaced Chris Houston in the Falcon secondary.  Chris Redman under center for Atlanta.

4:00 - Brohm is 17 for 29, 146 yards, no touchdowns, and two picks.  He hasn't looked terrible, but it's evident that it's his first NFL action.  Brohm can't afford to throw the quick out too far inside of his receiver - that's just asking to be intercepted.  Not Evans' fault there.

4:03 - I'm sure people have made the 'Chris Farley in Tommy Boy' comparison to Richie Incognito, but I doubt anyone has done so to his face.  I will not be the first.

4:05 - In a division with Baltimore and Pittsburgh, who would have thought that the Bengals would clinch the division title before the final week of the season?  Unbelievable - the NFL, where good defense is rewarded.

4:06 - Brohm doesn't see another snap under center as Atlanta runs out the clock.  Will he start next week if Fitzpatrick is healthy?  The game is in the books, Atlanta with its second straight win.

      ---------------------------------------------------End of Game, 31-3 Atlanta------------------------------------------

4:11 - Wait, the 2-12 Buccaneers just beat the 13-1 Saints?  Strange day in the NFL - 129 yards rushing and a score for Cadillac Williams.

4:14 - First time in NFL history where two guys with the same name scored TDs in the same game for opposing teams?  Both Steve Smiths caught scores in Carolina's 41-9 thumping of the Giants.

3:58 - Hello!  The Bills try to right the ship today after last week's ugly loss to New Orleans.  How will TO become more involved?  What kind of a split should we expect between Marshawn and Fred?  Lots of storylines to follow in this one.

4:02 - Chad Henne makes his first NFL start today - Chad Pennington is out for the year with a shoulder injury, but fortunately he won't need a third rotator cuff surgery.  His career is not over.

4:07 - Bills get the ball first, and Edwards finds Owens on first down to get him involved early.  Good screen on second down - excellent downfield blocking by rookie guard Eric Wood as well.

      terrell owens 104.jpg

4:09 - Our tackles could be overwhelmed on passing downs today - Chambers and Scott are below-average starters, and neither are exceptional in pass-blocking.

4:13 - Vernon Carey gave Kelsay far too much room inside, and the veteran defensive end made the play.  Roscoe with a great cutback on the punt; Mr. Tsuj became really excited.

4:15 - 95 degrees on the field today - hopefully the Bills are well-conditioned enough to endure the conditions.

4:17 - Welcome back, Marshawn.  The former Cal runner gets the call on first and second down, one on a run and another on a reception.  Edwards' third-down pass is well-defended by Will Allen, even though it didn't look like Allen even touched the ball.  He certainly disrupted the play, though.

      marshawn lynch 102.jpg

4:19 - Lex Hilliard with a bone-head error; his neutral zone infraction extended the Bills' second drive.  Fred with a powerful six yard run on first down.  Trent doesn't look sharp today; even his short passes are either high or just poor decisions.

4:21 - Lindell botches a 49 yarder.  Buffalo's offense is not in synch today and looks arguably worse than last week's disaster.  Bills' fans would be booing at the Ralph right now; I'm sure many of them are at home.

4:26 - The Brown/Williams duo is different than your ordinary tandem; they're similar in style instead of a 'thunder and lightning' complement.

4:28 - Chad Henne is playing like a quarterback making his first NFL start.  He looks hesitant and his passes have been inaccurate.  Nerves are probably a factor as well.  That, and his receivers are terrible.

      chad henne.jpg

4:30 - Decisive running and consistency are the reasons I feel Jackson should remain the feature back ahead of Lynch, at least in the meantime.  It doesn't hurt that Jackson is the superior receiver.  Lynch is more powerful, but you rarely see Jackson fail to hit the designed gap.

4:32 - And right as I say that, Marshawn breaks a tackle after a short pass and runs with purpose.  It's a good predicament to have with two starting-caliber backs.

4:36 - Trent proved more accurate on the last series, but the Dolphins blew up the pocket on third down, forcing Moorman to punt.  No score with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter.

4:41 - Henne decided to tuck it and run quickly - he missed an open receiver downfield.  He just needs NFL game experience; the Fins are confident he can be an legitimate starting QB.

4:43 - Third-string RB Patrick Cobbs is wide open in the flat; that's a play-call that Miami would run for Pennington, so clearly the scheme hasn't changed at all.  First down Miami in Buffalo territory after Henne's underthrown toss is adjusted to well by Greg Camarillo.

4:45 - The Wildcast doesn't phase Spencer Johnson, who darts into the backfield and pushes Ricky back.

      rickywilliams.gif

4:46 - George Wilson stays at home on Henne's boot-leg - forcing Miami to kick a field goal.  It's nice to have a disciplined veteran safety in there with starting experience with Scott and Whitner both out.  Dan Carpenter is automatic inside forty yards, and his 33-yard kick is true.  3-0 Dolphins with 11:38 left in the second quarter.

4:51 - Not a confidence booster for Trent; Vontae Davis (Vernon's brother) steps in front of Evans and trots into the end zone.  More of a poor play by Trent than a good play by Davis; the rookie corner didn't even have to break too hard on the ball.  Buffalo offense has been embarrassing.  Any pick-six is a serious momentum booster.  10-0 Miami with 11:23 remaining in the second.

      vontae davis.jpg

4:56 - Good toss by Edwards to Owens, allowing him to adjust and come back to the ball.  Lynch strings out the run but can't find a gap.  Still, Bills have the ball in the redzone for the first time today.

4:58 - Strange 3rd and 8 play-call - Geoff Hangartner is struggling today; he's been over-powered at least twice.  Lindell kicks a 35 yarder to bring Buffalo within a touchdown, 10-3.  8:48 remains in the second - big play of the drive was the 39 yard toss down the left sideline to Owens.

5:03 - Chad Henne could be a young Chad Pennington, just with a better arm and less accuracy.  So not really like Pennington at all, besides the fact that they share the same first name.  The Michigan alum's deep passes have left a lot to be desired, however.

5:05 - Our fill-in secondary has been exposed; Drayton Florence is below-average as an outside cornerback (he's more effective against the slot receiver), and Jairus Byrd blew the tackle on Ronnie Brown's Wildcat long run.  Fins deep in Bills territory with 5:30 left before halftime.

5:07 - The heat may be getting to our defensive line - the Miami line has been getting good push on this series.  Fourth and goal from inches away.  Ronnie Brown finishes it off with a one yard run.  17-3 Miami with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter.

      Ronnie-Brown-Photograph-C12398229.jpeg

5:11 - Marshawn has run six times for five yards.  First time that Marshawn and Fred have been in the backfield together; Marshawn with a bad drop on second down.  Edwards and the O have been stagnant - nothing is working.  The offensive line has been trampled, Edwards has looked woeful, and Fred hasn't touched the ball enough.

5:14 - The Wildcat has posed problems for the Bills, like it has for most opponents Miami has faced.  The creative formation allows the snap to go directly to the running back; the offensive line does not have to maintain its blocking assignments as long, and any problems that occur on a hand-off are eliminated.

      wildcat.jpg

5:19 - Marcus Stroud just burst into the backfield to sack Henne.  I've never seen a man his size run that fast.  Chad will have nightmares about that later.

5:20 - The Bills were in the nickel on Williams' first down run, it looks (I didn't see Buggs out there).  We're missing Poz dearly on run defense, obviously.

5:21 - Schobel with the coverage sack; that's our fourth of the game.  Henne was sacked six times in limited duty last week.  Jake Long, a mauling left tackle in the run game, still hasn't learned how to pass-block.

      Aaron-Schobel104.jpg

5:23 - Henne's third-down pass is high, and Buffalo gets the ball back with 26 seconds remaining in the first half, still down 17-3.

5:24 - There's a reason Kirk Chambers was cut on the final day of trainign camp; he's simply not strong or athletic enough to deal with pass-rushers, even the Cameron Wakes of the world.

      --------------------------------------------Halftime, 17-3 Miami---------------------------------------------------

5:28 - Two Mark Sanchez turnovers has the Jets facing a 17-3 deficit just before halftime.  He's having a 'Trent-Edwards-like' game.

5:36 - A lot of nice kick returns for TDs today - Jacoby Jones of the Texans and Johnny Knox of the Bears have had impressive seasons so far, and tacked on another score today.

      5:37 - Tsuj's Halftime Grades - Passing Game - D.  Running Game - B-.  Offensive Line - C-.  Run defense - C+.  Pass defense - B+. Special Teams - B.

5:39 - Mr. Tsuj and I just agreed that it's a minor miracle that Marcus Stroud (6'6 310+) can get up after each play.  He must not leave his bed on Mondays.

      marcus stroud 1004.jpg

5:41 - Nice timing play by Henne on third down - even a corner of McGee's caliber is resigned to just making the tackle.  It's hard to make a play on the ball on a quick, high-percentage pass.  Ronnie Brown is a tough runner.  That ACL surgery is a distant memory now.

5:44 - Ricky is a downhill runner too - he gained five or six yards after initial contact on Henne's short toss.  Playing a nickel is stupid against Miami, even with our injuries in the secondary.  The Bills need as many defenders in the box as possible to handle Ronnie/Ricky and the short passing game.

5:46 - 21 rushes for 114 yards between Brown and Williams, averaging over five yards per rush.  That's a good recipe for victory if they can maintain that success.

5:50 - Touchdown toss from Henne to Brian Hartline - you don't frequently see Michigan QBs hook-up with Ohio State receivers, but the Fins will take it.  24-3 Miami with over 8 minutes remaining in the third.  Turning into a blowout.  The Bills just don't bring it against division opponents.

      brian hartline.jpg

5:55 - How many Bills fans have turned the television off so far?  Very discouraging performance in many facets of the game.  Jauron to get canned this week?

5:56 - TO can't get his body in front of Will Allen, who closes fast and intercepts Edwards.  Miami starts on Buffalo 27.  Why do the Dolphins bother passing?  Their run blocking is a serious advantage, and Ricky and Ronnie hit the holes with authority.

6:00 - Smart call by Sparano to go for it on fourth down.  They narrowly converted it, but the injury-riddled Bills defense has worn down.

6:01 - Marcus Buggs over-pursues on the Wildcat, but it was the formation that got him there.  Had Henne been behind center, Brown would have been focused on taking the handoff and wouldn't have seen Buggs coming.

6:02 - Road-graders Justin Smiley, Jake Long, and Jake Grove are getting exceptional push.  This game is over.  Ricky Williams plowed in from the 1.  31-3 Miami and we're still in the third.

      jake-long.jpg

6:08 - Few were expecting the Bills to get blown out.  Dick Jauron's job is in serious jeopardy right now; it's on Ralph Wilson/Russ Brandon's shoulders to prepare the pink slip this week.  There are plenty of capable coaches out of work; even Perry Fewell could be a decent interim coach.  He could finish out the season until more candidates are available in the winter.

6:12 - Marshawn's not getting good blocking, simple as that.  Mr. Tsuj notes that Fred is a lot quicker to the hole than Lynch is.  Could just be a matter of not playing so far this year for Marshawn.

6:13 - Edwards has looked dispassionate on the sidelines.  Hopefully Langford's blow to Edwards' head fires him up instead of making him groggy.  Trent's not a leader.  Cameron Wake is causing fits.  Chambers and Scott?  No chance.

6:14 - Edwards' two long sidelines passes to Evans have been nice.  Too little too late, I suppose.

----------------------------------------------End of Third Quarter, 31-3 Miami-------------------------------------------

6:18 - 4th and goal completion for a touchdown from Edwards to Reed.  Great toss by Trent, putting the right amount of zip on the ball and hitting Josh in stride.  31-10 Miami.

6:22 - Good surprise onside kick; we should have recovered.  Nic Harris had a chance but couldn't corral it.  A lot goes on in the pile-up after a fumble.

6:25 - October is national breast-cancer awareness month.  That explains all the pink on the team apparel.  Good cause.

6:26 - Solid comeback route by the former Rainbow Bess.  Our defensive line hasn't played badly today - most of Henne's completions have been quick high-percentage throws, so getting pressure hasn't been easy.  Even so, George Wilson just recorded the team's fifth sack on the day.

      Davone Bess.jpg

6:28 - The Buffalo D stiffened on that drive, but remember, we're three touchdowns behind still.

6:34 - Trent was unwilling to take a chance down the field on third down, opting to check down for a two yard pass to Fred, who has virtually no chance of getting the first down.  Not the play-call on that one, definitely the blame is on Trent's decision making.  When you're down three TDs, you need to take risks to get back in the game.

6:37 - Nasty play by defensive end Ryan Denney, leaping over Ronnie Brown and tomahawking Henne's arm to record a sack and force a fumble.  Donald Thomas, the Fins' O-lineman, recovered.

6:41 - It cannot be denied: the Bills' defensive line has made plays.  The linebackers and secondary need to be more assertive.  Jairus Byrd has been thrust into action due to injury and is clearly not comfortable in the NFL yet.  He needs to become a better tackler.

6:43 - Demetrius Bell, I hope your groin heals fast.  I do feel awkward making positive comments about another man's groin, but seriously Demetrius, I hope it heals fast for the Bills' own good.

      dick jauron.jpg

6:46 - Dolphins score on their 70th play from scrimmage.  The Bills have only run 43 plays.  Ronnie Brown strolls in from four yards out.  Great blocking today from the third ranked rushing attack in the NFL (in fact, Miami averages more rushing yards per week than passing yards, the only NFL team to do so).  38-10 Miami with 3:43 left in the fourth.

6:53 - Lynch makes a nice play out of a screen pass in garbage time, then gets stuffed on a similar play on third down.  A weakside blitz forces Edwards from the pocket on fourth down, and he can't get enough on his throw to reach Evans in the back of the endzone.  Will Allen records his second pick of the afternoon.  It was pretty stupid of him to run it out of the endzone, though (if that's any consolation for us Bills fans.

6:55 - Taking a step back and evaluating this game - Miami, who hadn't won a game in 2009 entering this game, is playing its scrubs in a blowout win against an apathetic Buffalo team.

6:56 - Miami runs the clock out, ending the game.

      ------------------------------------------------End of Game, 38-10 Miami--------------------------------------------

6:57 - New Bills' head coach for the Cleveland game?  A possibility.  Even by Ralph's standards, this wouldn't be a drastic move.  We haven't won a game in the division since, well, 2007.  Very dispiriting loss for the Bills.

6:59 - Thank you for reading, everyone.  Frustrations continue for Buffalo fans.

      EDITING YOUR PROFILE

Maintaining a profile with some basic info about you and your interests is, of course, one of the most important aspects of a social network, and MyBuffalo is no exception. Ready to share a little info about yourself? It’s a quick and easy process.

Check out that green box on the right-hand side of the page with your username and the “My” links. Mouse over the MY PROFILE link. Three links will appear in a drop-down menu. Now, simply click on the EDIT MY PROFILE link.

      ADDING A PROFILE PHOTO

Click on the CONTRIBUTE link in the green box in the upper right-hand corner of any page. Next, click the UPLOAD PHOTOS link. This will take you to the photo upload page, and you’ll be able to select a photo from your own computer to upload. If you look directly beneath the photo uploader, you’ll see you have two options for this image – mark it as a “regular” photo, or make it your profile photo.

      ADD A PROFILE THEME IMAGE

Want to add some color to your profile page? Maybe a fancy design? This can be accomplished with a few swift clicks.

Follow the same path as above - click on the CONTRIBUTE link in the green box in the upper right-hand corner of any page, and then click the UPLOAD PHOTOS link. Now, when you’re taken to the photo uploader, look directly beneath the photo uploader once again – but this time, skip down to the third option, A PROFILE THEME IMAGE, and click the link.

You will now be redirected to the CUSTOMIZE PROFILE THEME page, and you can easily select one of our profile templates by clicking the ADD TO MY PROFILE links on the right-hand side of the page.

Feeling creative? Click the CREATE YOUR OWN PROFILE THEME link and build a new look for yourself.

ADD A (…BLOG, PHOTO, VIDEO, PODCAST)

There are a couple easy ways to do this – the first way is to simply mouse over the CONTRIBUTE link in the green box in the upper right-hand corner of any page. Next, click on the appropriate link for what you want to do – the uploading process should be pretty self-explanatory from there.

The other way into the content-uploading pages is to check out the navigation bar on top of the page. Let’s say that you mouse over the MYBUFFALO tab in the top navigation on any MyBuffalo page. You’ll see a drop-down menu appear that includes categories like “Photos,” “Videos,” “Podcasts,” and more.

Now, the main purpose of these links is to take you to pages where you can see the latest MyBuffalo content – but you can also contribute through these particular pages, as well. Go ahead and click the “Photos” link as an example. You’ll hop over to the “Most Recent Photos” page. Now look at the sub-navigation – that’s the thin little bar beneath the top navigation – and you’ll see an “Add a photo” link on the right-hand side.

This helpful little tool can also be found on the most recent video page, the most recent blog, and so on. So if you’re ever checking out the most recent media at MyBuffalo and feel inspired to start posting, you’re just a link away from getting started.

      WHAT ARE FANS?

Fans are the first step towards friendship. You see a particular user on the site and you say to yourself, “I would love to be friends with that person. It would bring me pleasure to see their latest activity in the My Friends & My News tab on my profile page. Perhaps we will begin messaging each other through the site, and a wonderful friendship will blossom.”

So what do you do? Simple – you click the “Add to Friends” link in that user’s profile. You are now a FAN of the user, and you will be updated whenever the user adds content to MyBuffalo.

      WHAT ARE FRIENDS?

When you check your profile, you’ll see that you have pending FRIEND requests. Simply click ACCEPT to make your FAN into FRIEND.

Not quite sure you want to pal up with this new FAN?  Just hit DECLINE, and that FAN will be no FRIEND of yours.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY USERNAME AND PASSWORD?

Well, for the time being, you can't change your username.  You can always make a new account with the username of your choice, but that's up to you.

You can, however, change your password - all you need to do is mouse over the MY PROFILE link in the green box on the right-hand side of the screen, and then click on the MY ACCOUNT link that pops up beneath.  Once you're in the MY ACCOUNT section, you will be able to edit your password, change your profile, or even update your email address.

  • UB - Akron Live-Blog UB - Akron Live-Blog

    • From: Tsuj10
    • Description:

3:15 - What's up?  UB Bulls mens' football team takes on MAC opponent Akron today in 25 minutes.  Due to the injury to right tackle Andrew West, left tackle Matt Ostrowski will fill his shoes and protect the blind-side of Zach Maynard.

3:16 - It's a must-win contest today for the Bulls; can they repeat last year's magical run?  I'll be back after a magical run to get more food.

3:21 - Akron lines up in a 3-4 defensively; hopefully UB will attack it more successfully than the Buffalo Bills (how can they not??).

3:22 - Just came from a short stop at the UB - Brockport club rugby match to watch a friend play, and I still have a hard time figuring out what's going on (which is sad, since I briefly taught the sport while in London).  I know this isn't relevant.

3:23 - The Zips' lone victory was a 41-0 against Morgan State, and FCS school comparable to Gardner-Webb, UB's opponent last weekend.

3:25 - Akron starts its third different quarterback in five games; senior starter Chris Jacquemain was suspended early in the season, backup Matt Rodgers tore his ACL last week against Ohio, and true freshman Patrick Nicely starts his first collegiate game today.

      patrick nicely.jpg

3:29 - I'm not sure if Mr. Nicely would like to see this photo on my blog - it looks mildly embarrassing.  Was he a jeopardy participant?  I can't figure what else the blue screen with his scribbled name would be for.  All that means is he's more intelligent than Vince Young.  Nice.

3:41 - We're just about to get underway.  45 degrees at game-time with mostly cloudy skies.  Wind north/northwest at 9 miles per hour.  Kickoff next.

3:44 - After a loss on a run by Nduka and an ugly miscommunication on Maynard's pass, Zach's toss over the middle to Jesse Rack fell incomplete.  A pass interference penalty is called on an Akron linebacker.  The LB definitely grabbed ahold of Rack to keep him from catching the pass.  Firstdown.

3:46 - Maynard scrambles right on third and 9 and stays inbounds to get the first down.  A nice improvisational play by the sophomore QB.

3:48 - Nduka finds a crease in front of the linebackers and hauls in a twelve yard first down catch.  After a hesitant first few touches, Nduka looks to have found a rhythm after an 8 yard run on first down.

      Ike nduka.jpg

3:50 - Nduka's run left for the first down sets up a play-action roll-out to the opposite by Maynard, but Roosevelt, his intended receiver, got tangled with an Akron corner.

3:52 - Bulls lose 9 on third down, pushing them out of field goal range.  Fardon's punt pins the Zips at their own 8.

3:53 - A true freshman starting at QB and a redshirt freshman starting at tailback (DeVoe Torrence) for Akron.  A lot of inexperience on offense today, but not a whole lot of film on these guys for the Bulls to study.

3:55 - Despite a nice first down toss by Nicely, Torrence is stuffed twice by Winters and then LaPointe short of the first down.  Bulls' run defense is stiff on Zips' first drive.

      justin winters.jpg

3:58 - Maynard and Roosevelt miscommunicate again on a route - Roosevelt broke deep and Maynard expected him to stay along the line of scrimmage.  Zach's pass is picked off, and Akron starts at the Bulls' 27 yard line.  Some offensive issues need to be cleaned up quickly.

4:00 - Nicely shows some elusiveness on his first-down rush; a quick cut-back gained space for the true freshman and forced a good tackle from behind by LaPointe to keep him out of the end-zone.

4:02 - Given good field position, Nicely looks fairly comfortable in the pocket.  His passes have some 'zip' (no pun intended, ok, maybe a little) on them, and he's been accurate so far.

4:02 - Anel Montanez forces a fumble from the redshirt freshman Torrence, and safety Mike Newton recovers at the Buffalo 5.  The play is currently under review, however.

4:07 - The turnover is upheld after review, but the Bulls quickly go 'three-and-out.'  Akron has done a solid job shutting down the UB offense, as Maynard does not look confident in the pocket this afternoon.

4:10 - Peter Fardon's punting struggles continue, providing the Zips a drive start at the Buffalo 36.  He can't seem to make good contact with the ball.  Dangerous Deryn Bowser catches a quick toss to the left of scrimmage and turns the corner for an 11 yard gain.

deryn bowser.jpg4:13 - Defensive back Andre Jones in on offense for the Zips, and Nicely hits him on the right immediately along the line of scrimmage.  Jones shows his elusiveness by darting past two would-be tacklers and setting up a manageable third down.

4:14 - Joe Tuzze is now in the backfield for Akron after Torrence fumbled to end the last possession.  Akron is utilizing the speed of wide receiver DaShan Miller and DB/WR Andre Jones, particularly on end-arounds and quick passes.  They have the ball inside the UB ten.

      -----------------------------------------End First Quarter 0-0-----------------------------------------------------

4:19 - Patrick Nicely bootlegs and fights off initial contact.  He's stopped at the goal-line and fumbles, but Akron offensive lineman Mike Ward recovers in the end-zone for a touchdown.  The play is under review.  The touchdown is upheld.  The scoring drive went 5 plays for 35 yards in 2:16.  7-0 Akron with 14:47 remaining in the second quarter.

4:22 - Linebacker Scott Pettigrew forced Nicely's fumble at the goal-line, giving the Bulls' another chance to force another Akron turnover deep in Buffalo territory, but Ward was in the right spot at the right time.  Needless to say, it's his first collegiate TD.

      pettigrew.jpg

4:26 - Maynard is attacking down the field on this drive, targeting Roosevelt on two consecutive passes.  The Biletnikoff nominee hauled in the first grab for a first down on an out and narrowly missed a one-handed catch on a go-route.  Roosevelt got behind the Zips' secondary but couldn't quite bring it in.

4:29 - Zach can't hook up with Rack on third down, forcing a Fardon "adventure punt" punt once again.  A flag flies but the punt is downed at the Akron 10 yard line.  Continuing the rugby theme, some Bulls and Zips engage in a scrum after the play.  12:37 left in the second.

4:30 - An absurd three fouls are called on the play - holding on Akron during the return and two off-setting personal foul penalties.  Looks like there's a little MAC Division hatred here.

4:32 - Bad news for the Bulls: starting running back Ike Nduka is out for the rest of the first half with an ankle injury.  His status will be re-evaluated during the intermission.

4:34 - The Buffalo run defense has been stout so far; Bruno LaPointe and Davonte Shannon have been very active in the box.  LaPointe and Shannon combine on a third and 2 stop of Joe Tuzze.

      davonte shannon.jpg

4:35 - Punting deep in their own territory, Akron downs their punt at the Zip 42.  Only 30 yards on the kick.

4:36 - Maynard scrambles left for 17 yards; he's hard t keep pace with when he gets to the outside.

4:36 - Roosevelt just caught his 241st career catch - he's now the school's all-time receptions leader.  Nice pump-fake by Maynard and a good adjustment when the ball was in the air by Naaman.  Bulls at the Akron 7 with 9:16 left in the half.

4:38 - Maynard underthrows a fade to Roosevelt in the back of the end-zone, and Akron CB Miguel Graham has excellent coverage on the play to knock it away.  Still, a catch-able ball for Roosevelt, should have been six.

4:40 - With the pass-rush in his face on third and goal from the 7, Maynard hits Roosevelt on a quick slant for the touchdown.  5 plays, 42 yards, 1:43 on the drive.  Maynard 7 yards to Roosevelt, 7-7 tie with 8:47 left in the 2nd quarter.

4:42 - Roosevelt was in the slot on the play, and he quickly earned position against the cornerback.  It was important that he got inside his defender immediately, as Maynard didn't have much time in the pocket.

Will Naaman Roosevelt score for the Bulls? Check out Tsuj10's blog!

4:44 - JaLil Carter's return leads to an Akron drive start at their own 37.

4:46 - Nicely tries to answer back quickly with a deep toss along the right sideline; a pass interference flag is thrown initially on Kendric Hawkins, but 'face-guarding' by cornerbacks is allowed in college.  Smart move by the referee to pick up the flag.

4:47 - The Buffalo defense rushes upfield too quickly on third and four, and no one stays home to keep an eye on Nicely, who scampers through a hole up the middle for a first down.

4:48 - After Davonte Shannon's huge hit on Dale Martin, Steven Means explodes into the backfield and drills Nicely for a big loss.  Unfortunately for the Bulls, Means is called for unsportsmanlike conduct; 15 yards is tacked on to the end of a loss of 12 - Means lack of discipline nets a three yard gain.

4:51 - Nicely connects with his wide-out on third and 7 for a first down, then Andre Allen gains 22 on a run off left tackle.

4:51 - Nicely then hits Bowser along the left sideline, and the receiver tries to lateral the ball after Newton's hit.  There are two flags on the play that off-set: offsides on Buffalo and an illegal forward lateral by Bowser.  The down will be replayed.

4:53 - Nicely zips a ball into the endzone, and the pass is tipped by Josh Thomas and intercepted in the end-zone by Mike Newton.  Touchback for the Bulls.  The action is rapid here at UB Stadium!

4:55 - 4:50 remains in the second quarter.  Maynard hooks up with Brett Hamlin on a 27 yard pass-play over the middle.  Hamlin showed his reliable hands on the play, elevating over his defender to make the grab.

      brett hamlin 1016.jpg

4:57- An 8-yard reception over the middle by Mario Henry sets up a 4th and 1 - looks like the Bulls will go for it with 2:55 left before halftime.  Timeout on the field, as the press box tries to regain its collective breath.

5:00 - Henry takes the hand-off left, but the offensive line can't get any push.  The senior running back loses four on the fourth and 1 play.  2:33 left and Akron ball at the UB 48 yard line.  The loss of Nduka has hurt the Bulls considerably.

5:02 - Great pass-defensed by Josh Thomas on a second-down Nicely toss.  He arrived with perfect timing and got a paw on the ball.

5:05 - Mike Newton breaks up the third down pass but is shaken up on the play.  The All-MAC safety walks off under his own power; he has been a ball-hawk today.  Akron to punt again.

5:06 - 1:57 left in the half, Bulls begin the drive on their own 16.

5:09 - Zach fakes a hand-off and keeps the ball, darting for 11 yards for a first down.  A quick toss to Roosevelt nets seven yards on first down - the Bulls call timeout with 46 seconds remaining and the ball on their 41.

      maynard run.jpg

5:10 - Another quick-hitter to Naaman leaves the receiver vulnerable to a big hit by Miguel Graham, but Buffalo picks up the first down.

5:11 - Maynard drops back to pass on first down, and the ball is knocked from his grasp from behind by a pass-rusher.  A UB lineman recovers the football, but the clock has run out on the first half.

      ---------------------------------------------------End of First Half 7-7----------------------------------------------

5:32 - Naaman Roosevelt broke the UB all-time receptions record, passing UB great Drew Haddad's total of 240 catches.  He has 8 grabs for 52 yards and a TD.

5:33 - Hamlin and Rack have struggled to get open - the Akron 3-4 scheme eliminates seams for the underneath receivers.  Highly-touted LB Brian Wagner has been active on defense for the Zips.

5:36 - Maynard is 11-21 with 99 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.  He has rushed five times for 25 yards.

5:34 - No update on Nduka's status at halftime, but this brownie is magnificent.

5:35 - Nicely starts the second half with a strong pass to Andre Jones, who is playing on both sides of the football.  Torrence converts the 3rd and 1 with a three yard gain off left-guard.

5:38 - Akron's true freshman quarterback completes a nice pass deep into Buffalo territory to Andre Jones; Bulls' corner Dominic Cook gets a late break on the throw and can't strip the ball away.

5:39 - First and 10 Akron at the UB 23 with 12:42 left in the 3rd.

5:41 - Nicely is making good decisions with the ball; he looks comfortable going through his progressions and throwing the high-percentage pass.  Nice defensive play by Scott Pettigrew, who knocked away Nicely's short first down pass over the middle.

5:42 - Montanez flushes Nicely out of the pocket, and the QB's throw on the run is too high for his intended receiver.  Branko Rogovic tries the 40 yard field goal, but his attempt is wide left.  Bulls take over on their own 23 with 12:21 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

5:46 - Mario Henry bursts off left-guard for a 14 yard gain on first down, and adds an 8 yard run up the middle on the following play.  He looks like a smaller, shiftier Nduka out there.  Henry's insertion into the lineup following Nduka's injury is evidence that the Bulls' brass has lost faith in Brandon Thermilus.

5:48 - Henry loses four yards on second and 1 following a roll-out completion from Maynard to Roosevelt.  Henry either gains big yardage or loses a lot - he doesn't have the consistent, tough running ability of 'Duke.'

5:49 - Fardon certainly doesn't have a great leg, but he just pinned Akron inside its own 15 for the second time.

5:50 - Brief anecdote from the press box: A Rochester reporter sat through a conference call with Rex Ryan immediately followed by Dick Jauron speaking from the podium.  He said it was like "having Weird Al Yankovic perform after Bruce Springsteen."

5:53 - After Sherrod Lott stops Torrence for a three yard loss, Nicely is pushed out of the pocket and launches a pass down the right side, but offensive pass interference is called on the Zip receiver, forcing the Zips to punt.

5:56 - Poor punt again by Akron.  Maynard hits sure-handed Hamlin down the middle for a gain of 24, then finds Henry on a screen for nine.  Bulls are on the Akron 10 yard line with 6:56 left in the third.

5:58 - Henry cuts back to his left to gain the first down; Zach Maynard throws a tremendous block downfield.  A holding penalty, however, is whistled on Roosevelt, pushing the Bulls back to the Akron 21.

5:59 - Naaman atones for his error by drawing a pass interference call on a sideline route.  The defender had to grab him to stop his progress; it looked like it would have been a sure touchdown.  Good recognition by Maynard of single-coverage on his star wide-out.

6:02 - On third and four at the 8, Maynard finds Roosevelt on the same play as their earlier touchdown; Maynard throws before the pressure gets to him and finds Roosevelt, who had cut in front of his defender and made the grab.  14-7 UB with 4:34 left in the third.  6 plays, 43 yards, 3:16 on the drive.  Second TD catch by Naaman on the day.

6:05- The Buffalo defense forces a third and three with 3:20 left in the quarter.  Nicely stands tall in the pocket and finds #82 Jeremy LaFrance for a first down in the seam.  The 18 year old freshman has shown a strong arm and impressive composure in the pocket.

6:08 - Nicely, throwing on first down, connects with Andre Jones on a quick slant for a nine yard gain.  On second down, Means romps into the backfield and takes down Nicely for an 11 yard loss.  No stupid celebration penalty for Means this time.  Second straight week with multiple sacks for Means.

6:09 - Nicely tries to find his WR on a streak, but Josh Thomas leaps and deflects the pass away.  A key play by Thomas there on third down - forcing an ugly punt that drops into the end zone.  17 yard net.

      josh thomas.jpg

6:12 - Maynard with an ill-advised deep ball to a double-covered Roosevelt; JaLil Carter picks the pass off and returns to the UB 40.  Horrible decision from the sophomore QB who overthrew his star receiver.  Huge momentum shift in favor of Akron at the end of the third quarter.  A 16 yard run to the right side puts the ball at the Buffalo 24.

      jalil.jpg

-------------------------------------------------End of 3rd quarter, 14-7 Buffalo--------------------------------------

6:17 - Crafty handoff from Nicely to Torrence, who gains 19 around right end.

6:17 - LaPointe corrals Torrence as the redshirt freshman tries to find a hole up the middle.  Gain of a yard.

6:20 - 13:46 left in the game, and Akron has the ball - second and goal at the UB 4 yard line.  Nicely has taken advantage of the good field position provided by Carter's interception and return.

6:21 - Patrick Nicely takes the high snap and keeps it himself - he changes direction on a dime.  Akron faces a third and goal at the 1.  Alex Allen slashes through the middle of the Bulls' defense for a one yard touchdown run.  14-14 with 12:56 left in 4th.  5 plays, 40 yards, 2:32.

6:26 - Terrell Jackson returns the kickoff to the 28, but a block in the back forces UB to start at their own 10 yard line.  This low-scoring game has turned into a field position battle; whoever converts turnovers into points will win this game.

6:28 - Mario Henry off left-tackle for a gain of 9.  The senior has demonstrated above-average speed but hasn't broken many tackles.  Three-and-out on the series after Maynard's quick slant is just out of Roosevelt's reach.

6:30 - Fardon just cannot get much leg into his punts - Jones fields the punt at the UB 40 and returns it to the 35.  Fantastic drive-start for Nicely, who took advantage of prime field position last time.

6:32 - Nicely completes a quick-out to DaShan Miller, who breaks a tackle for a 14 yard gain.  On the next play. Nicely fakes a hand-off and hooks up with Jeremy Bruce for 8 yards.  10:22 remains and Akron is at the UB 13.

6:34 - Nicely tries to force the ball into triple coverage on third and 2 - the pass falls incomplete.  Branko Rogovic finally hits a field goal from 30 yards out.  17-14 Akron with 9:57 left.

6:36 - Dominic Cook brings the ball up to the UB 32 with a 22-yard kickoff return.  9:48 remaining.

6:37 - The re-structured offensive line has held up well to this point.

6:38 - Maynard fakes a hand-off and rolls out left; he finds Hamlin for a 13 yard gain along the right sideline.  Despite being left-handed, Maynard manages to put some mustard on throws when he rolls out to the right.

6:40 - On second down, Maynard throws quickly to Roosevelt in the flat, who sprints for 8 yards.

6:40 - Nice blocks by Jesse Rack and Matt Ostrowski on two straight running plays by Henry, which nets a first down for the Bulls.

      jesse rack.jpg

6:42 - Maynard and Roosevelt execute a pretty 16-yard pump-and-go, but Roosevelt is drilled at the 1 by Wayne Cobham.  Henry powers in from one yard out for the touchdown.  21-17 Buffalo with 5:59 left.  9 plays, 68 yards, 3:49.

6:45 - Roosevelt has 12 catches for 100 yards and 2 touchdowns.  That was Henry's second TD run of the season.

6:48 - Akron quickly goes three-and-out; Nicely's incomplete third down pass was the product of good coverage by Davonte Shannon.  Hamlin gives the Bulls great field position, but they have squandered it so far on this drive (Henry loses yardage, incomplete pass to Naaman.)

6:51 - On 3rd and 16, Maynard calls his own number and bursts up the middle for 11.  UB tries to draw the Zips offside on fourth down, but they take the delay of game.  Fardon's punt pins Akron inside its 10.

6:53 - A great 22 yard deep out from Nicely to DaShan Miller gives the Zips some breathing room.  Fantastic throw from the freshman out of his own end-zone facing a pass-rush.

6:55 - The Akron QB hits LaFrance for another first down at the right sideline; LaFrance is sure-handed.  A delayed draw to Torrence puts the ball at the UB 29 after a ten yard gain.

6:55 - Steve Means (pictured below) pressures Nicely and forces him to throw it away.  1:47 left.

      steve means.jpg

6:56 - LaFrance, Mr. Sure-Hands, tips a pass (behind him) into the air, and Dominic Cook picks the pass off and returns the ball to the Akron 23.  Game should be over!

6:57 - Cook returns the interception, his first of the season, for 55 yards.  Nicely had orchestrated a nice two-minute drill until his throw behind LaFrance resulted in a pick for UB.  1:05 remaining and the clock continues to run with the Zips out of timeouts.

      -----------------------------------------------------End of Game, UB 21-17----------------------------------------------

7:01 - An important victory for the 3-4 (1-2in MAC) UB Bulls, who travel to Western Michigan next Saturday.  Mario Henry ran well in place of Ike Nduka, who left in the first half with an ankle injury.  Naaman Roosevelt continued his record-breaking Bulls' career, setting the all-time mark in receptions and scoring two more touchdowns.

8:42 - Some post game notes/reflections:  Mario Henry received all the second half carries because Brandon Thermilus had suffered an ankle injury shortly after Nduka's.  With both running backs out for the game, Henry was the starter by default.

The press conference was very upbeat despite a sloppy win.  WNY Media Network's Chris Ryndak was surprised how loose the players and Coach Gill were during the interviews.  It's an encouraging sign that a young team can pull out a win despite not playing far from its best football.

Steve Means' two consecutive multi-sack games suggest that he's the real deal, and Dominic Cook's win-sealing interception must boost his confidence.  Josh Thomas had a good game on the other side as well, breaking up multiple passes.

      DanLeFevour.jpg

Western Michigan (3-4) lost to Central Michigan tonight 34-23.  Dan LeFevour (pictured above) played a turnover-free game, throwing two touchdowns and rushing for another.  Tim Hiller torched the Chippewa secondary for 410 yards passing; next week will be a tougher test for Dominic Cook and Josh Thomas.

Jauron.jpgJauron.jpgBuffalo News columnist Jerry Sullivan called Sunday's loss against Miami, the "worst loss of the nauseating Jauron-Bills era".  Is this truth or exaggeration?  Here at MyBuffalo.com, we are Bills fans, and we were disgusted by Sunday's loss.  After all, we went into the game against the winless Dolphins team, thinking "we'll win today".  Not so fast, we were trampled - 38-10.  The Bills didn't have a single rushing first down. What's the answer?  Fire the coach?  Get rid of QB Trent Edwards?  Or just give up on the season and hope for a higher draft pick next year.  Is there still hope?  Remember, we are going into week 5 of the regular season, there's still time to rebound, right?  Sound off on the Bills on Buffalo.com.

  • Hate Crimes or Crimes of Hate? Hate Crimes or Crimes of Hate?

    • From: schumeea1
    • Description:

Lindsay HarmonWhat exactly constitutes a hate crime? Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you've probably heard about the stabbing of Lindsay Harmon outside the Roxy's complex in Allentown. You've probably also heard about the Cheektowaga man who was assaulted and beaten outside the Galleria mall. Gay slurs were a part of both attacks. But does the presence of the words
"gay" or "lesbian" automatically qualify a crime as a hate crime? Does the absence of them disqualify a violent incident from being one?

The Buffalo News ran a story about the Harmon incident in Sunday's paper which was posted online afterward. Reading some of the comments on that story made me sick to my stomach. I think that's the best and worst part of online journalism: the average citizen can weigh in completely anonymously, for better or for worse.

Many kind, concerned people commented with well-wishes for Harmon and expresing horror and hoping for justice. Others, however, threw epithets and speculation ranging from whether Harmon had provoked the attack to the "perversion" of her orientation.

At the end of the day, all crimes are motivated by hate. Does it really matter, at the root of things, whether a crime is done against a person for a specific reason, a specific aspect of their person? It came out today that the Cheektowaga man assaulted at the mall is not actually gay, despite the slurs thrown at him by his attackers. Does that make his attack less of a "hate crime?" Harmon is a lesbian, and may or may not have contributed to the incident. Does that make her less deserving of justice?

Frankly, I don't really care whether victims of crimes are gay or straight, black or white, rich or poor, et cetera. A crime is a crime. Has the Harmon case gotten more publicity because of her orientation and the location of the attack? Probably. Have countless murders and assualts occurred on the East Side that don't even get two lines in the paper? Undoubtedly. I see this dichotomy as less indication of the bias of the News or their hunger for a sexy story than confirmation that there is a perversion in human nature we all have to work against.

Harmon could have been one of my friends, or yours. She could have been your daughter, my sister, your classmate. For that matter, so could any victim, of any crime, anywhere. Love is love. Hate is hate. As far as I'm concerned, there's no hierarchy. Your love is no better than mine, and the hate leveled at Harmon was no greater or lesser because of who she chooses to go home to at night. The citizens of Buffalo, and of the world in general, would do well to stop the petty arguments over potentially-irrelevant details and remember that. At its base, we're all human. No more, no less.

    • Description:

12:48 - Welcome to Week 17 of the NFL, the final time the Buffalo Bills will suit up for a regular season game until September.  At 5-10, the Bills look to start 2010 on a winning note and earn their first victory under new GM Buddy Nix.

12:53 - The Colts, at 14-1, have locked up a first round bye and the top seed in the American Football Conference playoffs.  Like the second half of last week's controversial loss to the New York Jets, Indy will rest their stars, namely Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, and Dwight Freeney.

12:55 - There's a dusting of snow on the Ralph Wilson Stadium turf and it continues to swirl around the field - it's bitterly cold outside in Western New York.

Indy Pro Bowl QB Peyton Manning

12:56 - Mark Gaughan made a good point in the Buffalo News this week - the Colts were smart to rest their starters against the Jets as they will rely primarily on their top five players in the playoffs - they're not that strong 1-53.  There was absolutely no room to risk injury in an attempt for a perfect season.

12:59 - Amusing statistics of note in this game, at least for a Colts fan - Buffalo ranks dead last in the NFL in third down conversion percentage (25%), while Indy moves the chains at a rate of 50.5%.  Also, the Colts' offensive line has surrendered only 12 sacks on the year, fewest in the NFL.

1:01 - The prevailing opinion that I've heard is that few Buffalo fans actually want to attend today's game - this isn't surprising since Curtis Painter vs. Ryan Fitzpatrick isn't what you'd consider a must-see matchup.

1:04 - Buffalo will open with the football - Indy is vulnerable against the run and is starting a number of reserves in the front seven.

1:06 - The heavily-overrated wide receiver screen fails on 3rd and 3, as Roscoe Parrish hauls in a Fitzpatrick lob on a play that demanded a dart.  The first third down conversion attempt fails for Buffalo.

1:07 - Jon Corto starts at linebacker for Buffalo - the Bills now have a whopping 20 players on injured reserve.

1:08 - In his first real action of the year, late-round rookie Cary Harris takes advantage of a slip from Manning's WR to slide forward and pick of the Pro Bowl QB.  Buffalo takes over at the Indy 41.

1:10 - CBS commentator Bill Macatee describes Jacob Lacey as a backup cornerback seeing action today in place of injured rookie Jerraud Powers, but really Lacey has been a contributor all season long.  He's tallied 79 tackles and a pick six - excellent for an undrafted free agent signing in 2008.

Undrafted free agent Jacob Lacey has made a name for himself because of injuries in Colts' secondary

1:11 - Jackson sweeps left all the way to the Indy 15 yard line - a nice block on the play by preseason sensation Jonathan Stupar.

1:13 - Fitzpatrick keys on Owens in the end zone, but the 6'3 target is blanketed by three Indy defenders and the pass is knocked away.

1:14 - I've been buying Gatorade Tiger at work a lot recently, and it's provided plenty of energy.  I've developed a tendency to look at women longer than usual, however, and that's troubling.

1:15 - Fred Jackson leaves the backfield on a crossing pattern over the middle and catches a strike from Ryan Fitzpatrick - the 11 yard score gives Buffalo a 7-0 lead with 9:25 left in the first.

      fred jackson.jpg

1:17 - Thanks, Yahoo! for not updating your NFL boxscores today, making my life that much harder.  Boohoo.

1:18 - 40 mph winds and 7 inches of snow?  The game could turn really ugly in the second half.

1:20 - There we go, Yahoo! Sports, maybe it was just an early 2010 glitch.

1:21 - Schobel gets pressure on Manning on first down, but Peyton's quick tight end screen to Dallas Clark earns a first down.  The Manning-Wayne reception on the Colts' first play from scrimmage passed Jim Kelly to Andre Reed on most completion between a passing tandem.

1:22 - That's how you convert a third down - Reggie Wayne runs a great dig route to gain slight separation from Reggie Corner, and Manning hits him in the numbers to move the chains.

1:24 - With a down year from Jason Witten, Dallas Clark has emerged as the most dangerous tight end in the NFL today.  Manning loves to find Clark underneath the coverage matched up against a linebacker.

1:25 - The Colts have marched down to the Buffalo 11 yard line on a heavy dose of short tosses to Wayne and Clark - both receivers are excellent at making the first tackler miss, gaining yards after the catch.

Expect sparse playing time from Colts' star wideout Reggie Wayne

1:27 - Because Clark is a nightmare matchup for anyone, this will be a great test for Paul Posluszny's coverage skills, which have improved markedly over the second half of the season.

1:28 - Mike Hart, the former Michigan Wolverine, bulls into the end zone from one yard out.  7-7 tie with 3:52 left in the first.  I expect that to be the final drive we see Manning, Wayne, and Clark, as the Colt offense operated more smoothly on the second series.

1:30 - Good patience by Justin Jenkins, alertly allowing the kickoff to roll out of bounds.  The Bills will start at the 40 instead of inside their own 15.

1:32 - ESPN reports that Buffalo held a 'stealth meeting' with CBS analyst and former Steelers' head coach Bill Cowher just prior to the hiring of Buddy Nix - the session was reportedly 'very productive.'  Then again, Cowher said he'd 'probably be back with CBS' next year during the pre-game show.  Billick or Brian Schottenheimer appear to be better options.

1:35 - The Buffalo offense has been tentative to throw downfield on third and long this year - I assume it's because the brass doesn't have enough faith in the offensive line to maintain protection long enough for routes to develop.  The crowd boos Fitzpatrick's two yard screen pass to Lynch on third and ten, bringing Moorman on to punt.  Manning, contrary to what I expected, will return to direct the offense on a third series.

Former UConn and current Indy RB Donald Brown

1:37 - Donald Brown isn't a strong east-west runner - he earned most of his 261 yards against the UB Bulls in last year's International Bowl by trampling would-be tacklers.

-----------------------------------------------End of First Quarter, 7-7 tie--------------------------------------------

1:40 - With that reception for no gain, Reggie Wayne has reached 100 receptions on the year, only his second season with 100 or more receptions (2007 was the first.)

1:41 - Indy is solely concerned with personal accolades in this game - both Wayne and Clark have hauled in their 100th receptions of the season.  It seems like they're just toying with the Buffalo defense - they don't care about winning this game, just about setting records before letting the reserves play out the regular season.  It's pretty impressive that Clark is only the second TE in NFL history with 100 grabs in a year.

1:44 - Wes Welker left the New England - Houston game with a serious looking knee injury; that definitely was what New England wanted to avoid with the AFC East title already clinched.  Welker's loss would be comparable to the Colts losing Dallas Clark for the postseason.  Welker and Clark are the players that exploit holes and create mismatches in front of the opposing secondary, drawing attention and creating space for Moss and Wayne.

1:47 - Fred Jackson continues to bounce off Indy defenders en route to positive yardage - each hit must sting a little more in the brutally cold weather in Orchard Park.

1:49 - Nice composure by Fitzpatrick on that third down conversion (3-5 today) - the QB handled a low snap and found Evans at the first down marker.

Bills' starting LT Jamon MeredithBills' starting LT Jamon Meredith

1:50 - Fitzpatrick looks deep for Owens, but his pass sails out of bounds, five yards out of reach.  Fred Jackson is stuffed on third and 2, and the OP faithful boo as the punting team trots on the field.  Jamon Meredith and Jonathan Stupar were abused on that third down run play.

1:53 - Curtis Painter is probably the worst quarterback to take a snap in the NFL this season.  The Indy offense collapsed with him orchestrating the attack - the Colts were up 15-10 when Manning departed, and lost 29-15.  Where's Jim Sorgi when you need him?  (Nursing an injury.)

1:55 - Buffalo will start at midfield after a booming punt by rookie Pat MacAfee.  Parrish nearly broke a long return but was dragged down by the ankles.  At least he's not losing yards or fumbling the football.

1:58 - There's a layer of snow on the field now as Terrell Owens provides a solid block on Fred Jackson's run.  T.O. is excited that he's producing in any facet of the game.  Owens is not accustomed to the snow.

      Ryan fitzpatrick 1018.jpg

1:59 - Jackson bursts to the left side this time on a counter - Lee Evans manages to get a piece of the corner, opening up another five yards for Fred.  13 rushes for 78 yards for the Coe College alum.

2:01 - A bullet from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Lee Evans on a 21 yard post pattern for the score - 14-7 Buffalo with 5:02 remaining in the half.  That's easily Fitzpatrick's best looking throw of the season, and Lee's seventh TD of the season.

2:05 - The snow is falling even more heavily now, as it's a white-out on the field.  Visibility is an issue, and the Colts' white jerseys could be an advantage.

2:06 - Nice throw from Painter to Tamme for a first down.  The middle official gets drilled to the turf after taking a Manning pass to the head earlier in the afternoon.  Want to get away?

2:09 - The season finale has been rough for Buffalo the past two years - last season's loss to New England featured a bitter wind so strong that the game had to be stopped because the goal-posts bent severely.

2:10 - I have no idea what Curtis Painter is doing in the NFL - he fumbles the ball in the backfield and the Bills recover.  Chris Kelsay falls on the ball at the Indy 45 yard line.

2:11 - Fitzpatrick hits Terrell Owens for 41 yards and a score down the right sideline.  The Harvard grad, whose thrown for three TDs in the first half, looked off his receiver as T.O. burst passed Kelvin Hayden to reel in the score.  21-7 Bills with 2:28 left before halftime.

      buffalo-bills-logo.gif

2:14 - Steve Beuerlein puts a damper on the offensive explosion by pointing out that Indy's second string defense is at fault.  There've certainly been blown coverages, but it looks like bad weather brings out the best from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

2:17 - You haven't been cut yet Curtis Painter?  The rookie from Purdue turns the ball over for the second straight possession as his pass floats into the hands of center-fielder Cary Harris, the second pick of the day for the former USC star.

2:21 - The Bills' defense has recorded 27 interceptions on the season, the most in franchise history.  Buffalo picked off 25 passes in the 14-game 1975 season, and only intercepted ten balls last season.  Fred Jackson and the secondary are the main bright spots in the 2009-2010 season.

2:24 - This weather suits Jackson's talents perfectly - he's extremely shifty and makes sharp cuts - with the poor footing on the slippery surface, there's no surprise that Jackson's already rushed for 104 yards.

      Fred Jackson 1018.jpg

2:26 - You gotta love a delay of game penalty immediately after a timeout; there's the 5-10 Bills.

2:28 - Given another opportunity after a neutral zone infraction by the Indy defense, Fitzpatrick zings a pass through the hands of tight end Joe Klopfenstein outside the right hash.  Known for his shaky hands during his stint in St. Louis, Klop hasn't been able to dodge that label.

2:31 - Battling the elements, Rian Lindell knocks in a 31 yard field goal to increase the lead to 24-7 with 14 seconds left.

2:33 - Curtis Painter is making Ryan Fitzpatrick look like a perennial Pro Bowler.  I'm backing the insertion of Drew Willy in the second half, if he is active.

      -----------------------------------------------------Halftime, 24-7 Buffalo----------------------------------------------

2:36 - At the break, Ryan Fitzpatrick is 12-17 passing for 118 yards, three scores, and no turnovers.  Fitz has found three different targets in the red zone.  Fred Jackson has carried 18 times for 102 yards and added a receiving touchdown.  It's the second time this season that the Bills have scored three TDs in a half (vs. Miami in Week 12).

2:47 - Most of the meaningful games as far as the playoff seedings are concerned begin at 4:15 - highlighted by the Eagles/Cowboys game and capped off by the Jets/Bengals clash at 8:20 on NBC.

2:49 - Finally we can see the yard-lines and hashmarks again!  Good work by the Ralph Wilson Stadium rotary brushes to clean off the snow-covered field at halftime.  The weather has improved slightly as the second half commences.

2:50 - Mike Hart tries to break free down the left sideline, but he's brought down by the combo of Schobel and George Wilson.  Painter throws behind Hank Baskett on second down.  Baskett's wife, a Playboy playmate, is rather attractive.

Hammerin' Hank Baskett's Playboy wife, Kendra Wilkinson

2:52 - I'm guessing Kenda didn't choose to marry Hank because of his NFL success - he's been mediocre at best, struggling to carve out a role during his first three seasons with the Eagles.

2:54 - For instance, when you search "Hank Baskett" on google, you wind up with at least 20 pictures of his wife on the front page, and maybe two pictures of Hank himself.  Nice (who's complaining?)

2:55 - Painter and the Indy offense opted to go for it on fourth down at the Buffalo 40, but Giguere couldn't hold on to the rookie's pass on the left hashmark.

2:56 - Joseph Addai hasn't set the world on fire this year, either - he's averaging under four yards per carry.

2:57 - Vintage Fred Jackson on that 22 yard run; the starting RB shed multiple tacklers and refused to go to the ground.  He's solidified his role as the Buffalo starting RB in 2010.  With another strong run, this time to the right side, Jackson is only 4 yards away from reaching 1,000 for the first time.

3:00 - Peyton Manning will miss the next three weeks after suffering severe frostbite on the sideline in Orchard Park.

3:01 - Just kidding, Peyton can only be stopped by dual pass-rushing bears.

Manning can only be stopped by large, furry Bears

3:02 - Buffalo continues to pound the ball on the ground, but Jackson is stopped shy of the first down.  Rian Lindell drills his second kick of the day, this one from 33 yards out27-7 Bills halfway through the 3rd quarter.

3:04 - Raise your hand if you'd heard of Sam Giguere prior to the game today.  Also, raise your hand if you secretly believed that Indy signed an NHL goalie to a one-game contract.

3:06 - Mike Hart displays some of the 'heartiness' that Buffalo.com's Ben Kirst insists that the RB must have, hailing from Syracuse and all.  Nice run by Hart, who's been beset by injuries during his latter college years and early NFL career.  He's suffered a similar fate as Chris Perry, another former Michigan RB.

3:09 - In roughly one game of NFL action, Curtis Painter is 6-21 passing for 74 yards, two interceptions, two fumbles lost, and no points to speak of.

3:11 - I can't think of a more deserving back to reach the 1,000 yard plateau than Fred Jackson - he just eclipsed the barrier on that 20 yard cut back run to the left sideline.  He's rushed for 166 yards on the day (5 minutes left in the 3rd).

3:13 - Jackson is just punishing the Colts' front seven - Ramon Humber was driven onto his back on the last run.

Indianapolis reserve LB Ramon Humber will see plenty of action today

3:14 - Incognito is whistled for a hold on Jackson's rush that lost three yards.

3:15 - If there's one area where Fitzpatrick's improved, it's in looking off his intended receiver until just before he releases the ball.  When he replaced Edwards early in the season, Fitzpatrick would lock in on Owens or Evans, allowing the defensive backs to read the QB's eyes and swarm to the football.

3:17 - Aided by blocks from Fitzpatrick and Lee Evans, Jackson scampers down the right sideline for another 26 yard gain, surpassing 200 yards rushing for the day.  A thoroughly dominating performance from #22.

3:19 - Buffalo is now 5-11 on third down as Fitzpatrick's errant pass glances off Owens' fingertips.  Lindell calmly converts his third field goal today from 30+ yards, this one from 36.  30-7 Buffalo and Indy should consider a Coach Eric Taylor forfeit and elect to go home now.  14 seconds left in the third.

3:21 - With over 120 yards rushing in the third quarter helping his cause, Jackson is the first Bill since Thurman Thomas in 1990 to break the 200 yard barrier in an afternoon.  Well done, Fred.

-------------------------------------------End of 3rd Quarter, 30-7 Buffalo----------------------------------------------

3:26 - As a Wolverines fan, it's not shocking to see Hart struggle at the NFL level.  He was never particularly elusive or fast collegiately, just stronger and able to run through inferior competition.  Missing two offensive line starters hasn't helped Hart, either.

3:27 - I can't begin to tell you how bad Curtis Painter has looked today - he's completed 2-12 passes.  Those are some October 2009 Derek Anderson-esque numbers.  Buffalo takes over again - maybe Marshawn will see a series now that Jackson has exceeded his goal.

3:30 - Time for a shout-out to the Buffalo offensive line (the ninth different set of starters this year) that's paved the way for Jackson's 200 yard day.  Good work by Jamon Meredith, Andy Levitre, Geoff Hangartner, Richie Incognito, and Kirk Chambers in overpowering the undersized, inexperienced Indy front.

Buffalo guard Richie Incognito, signed this week

3:32 - Moorman will punt after unsuccessful running attempts by Jackson and a short pass to Owens.  11:09 left in the game.

3:35 - Who would have thought that the two undefeated teams after 13 games (Indianapolis and New Orleans) would lose five of their six remaining games?  The Saints are trailing Carolina by 13 in the 4th quarter after falling to Tampa and Dallas the two weeks before.

3:36 - Some negative publicity for former UB center Jamey Richard, who failed to keep Kyle Williams out of the backfield on the second down run.

3:37 - Drayton Florence rudely hurls Brown rookie Colin Cloherty to the turf short of the first down marker.  It's nice that Buffalo closes the year on a winning note, but I wish Indy would have put an ounce of effort into making this a competitive game.  Their offense has been laughable - the Montreal Arouettes' D would have shut them down today.

3:40 - Does Fitzpatrick's efficient performance today put him in the conversation to be a starter in 2010?  I don't think so, but some may disagree with me.  He's looked far more accurate and comfortable than usual, but that could be because Pro Bowl bookends Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney aren't staring him down from across scrimmage.

3:43 - With that short crossing pattern over the middle that racked up 14 yards, Owens has moved to 3rd all-time in receiving yards.  Lots of record have been set today - Clark notched the second 100-reception season by a tight end, Jackson broke the 1,000 yard barrier for the first time in his career, and Freddy became the first Bills' back in 20 years to rush for over 200 in a game.

      Buffalo Bills Logo

3:45 - Let's hope they marked Owens' ball that a Bills' staff member just put in the 'record bin' so it doesn't get confused with Jackson's earlier piece of memorabilia.

3:47 - Eager to buy your Curtis Painter jersey to commemorate this dynamite performance?  The throwback version looks sexy.

      Colts' reserve QB Curtis Painter

3:48 - If you're wondering what's going on in the game, I apologize for getting sidetracked by my strange remarks.

3:49 - The Bills went three and out but ran a good chunk of the clock on runs by Jackson and McIntyre.  Painter's been on fire in the fourth, completing two of his last five passes, good for 4-17 on the day.  Under four minutes remaining, and Hank Baskett just got his bell rung by the hard Ralph turf.  He's still smarter than Kendra.

3:53 - Corey McIntyre is a ferocious runner when he gets some momentum going - "He's not a small man," Bill Macatee remarks.  Very insightful, Bill.  2 minute warning stoppage now.

3:56 - "They're not saying booooh, they're saying moooovers."  Obligatory Peyton Manning commercial reference.

3:57 - Brian Brohm enters the game for kneel-down duties - Buffalo finishes the season at 6-10, and there seems to be a mix of cheers and boos from the Bills' crowd, excited to finish on a winning note but frustrated in another losing season.

Buffalo Bills' QB Brian Brohm makes his first NFL start

3:59 - With the Bills' win combined with a Chicago win, Buffalo will select 9th in the 2010 NFL Draft this coming April.

---------------------------------------------End of Fourth Quarter, 30-7 Buffalo-------------------------------------

4:00 - Some final numbers - Fitzpatrick finishes 16 for 25 with 155 yards, three TDs, and no turnovers.  Jackson toted the ball 33 times for 212 yards and added 15 yards receiving and a score.  Terrell Owens and Lee Evans added first half touchdowns and 114 receiving yards between them.

4:02 - Painter completed 4 of 17 passes for 39 yards, one interception, and one lost fumble.  I don't see him in Indy's future plans.  Paul Posluszny totaled 11 tackles, while Kyle Williams added 6 tackles and a sack.

4:03 - Thanks for tuning in to the live-blogs this year; it's been a pleasure for me.  Thanks also to Buffalo.com for the opportunity.  I hope to provide decent off-season coverage of the Bills, including mock drafts, possible free agent destinations, and details of the head coaching search.
