    • Description:

I'm always listening to new music and on the search to find new music. If you ask anybody that knows me, I'm usually their "go-to" person for music recommendations. These are some of my favorite artists at the moment that I feel have the ability to be huge in the near future.

      ANCHOR & BRAILLE

Stephen Christian is one of the most inspirational singer-songwriters in today’s music scene. Christian, better known as the frontman of the alternative/pop-rock band Anberlin, has just released his solo debut, Felt, under the name of Anchor & Braille; his acoustic side project.Anchor & Braille - Felt - Album Cover

Anchor & Braille serves as Christian’s platform to showcase his music that he had written, but would never see the light of day as Anberlin material. In an earlier interview I had conducted with Stephen, he stated that the material he had written was a bit “different than what he was used to writing and performing with Anberlin,” and that he felt his lyrics and ideas were “more personal,” which he felt he wasn’t ready to share with a bigger audience.

Anchor & Braille’s music is greatly distinguishable from the music that is Anberlin. The structure behind Anchor & Braille is more unplugged-esque; toned-down instruments such as keyboards, pianos and acoustic guitars. However, the debut utilizes a full band.

The album is one of this year’s most anticipated releases of it’s genre. The 11 track album was written and recorded over the last four years and was produced by Copeland’s frontman, Aaron Marsh. The first single, “Still Sleeping,” is available now on iTunes. It was also featured on the compilation album, Punk The Clock, Volume Three.

Stephen Christian (Anchor & Braille) recently finished up his first solo tour; having spent most of July opening for Copeland and Sherwood.

      THE DANGEROUS SUMMER

The Dangerous Summer - Reach For The Sun - Album CoverThe Dangerous Summer - Reach For The Sun - Album CoverThe Dangerous Summer is an alternative pop-rock band from Ellicott City, Maryland. The band independently released the five song EP There Is No Such Thing as Science, in 2007. The band has a strong DIY (Do It Yourself) upbringing and heavily promoted themselves via Myspace and Purevolume. After the release of their EP, it caught the attention of indie label, Hopeless Records, in which they soon found as their new home.

They then re-released their debut EP under a new name, If You Could Only Keep Me Alive, that included new tracks. The band's debut studio album, Reach for the Sun, was released on May 5, 2009 and reached #42 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. –For a debut album and a band that has been around for less than three years, that’s pretty damn impressive.

The band’s name "The Dangerous Summer" is taken from the novel of the same name. The band has stated influences from Third Eye Blind, Bright Eyes, Jimmy Eat World, and Andrew McMahon of the bands Jack’s Mannequin and Something Corporate.

Their song "The Permanent Rain," from the If You Could Only Keep Me Alive EP, was recently used in a trailer for the movie "Love Happens", starring Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart.

The band is just finishing up a nationwide tour, supporting Ace Enders & A Million Different People on the BBQ Across America Tour.

      THE READY SET

The Ready Set, is a one-man synth-infused alternative pop-rock band influenced by life, love and music. It’s all brought to life by Indiana’s Jordan Witzigreuter. Jordan Witzigreuter of The Ready Set

At 19, Witzigreuter, who is just out of high school, is a guy with flourishing talent. Jordan not only writes and records all of his own music, he plays drums, keyboards and more. –Picking up his first set of drum sticks while he was a young chap in the fifth grade.

By the time Witzigreuter was 14, he had been in numerous bands but knew at heart he belonged on his own. At 16 The Ready Set was born.

The Ready Set’s live show is impressive. While Jordan is the brain behind the music, he does have a live touring band; he has friends join him on tour to help amplify his live show. His shows are complete with smoke and vibrant lighting effects and the infectious melodies and dance beats that is The Ready Set.

Jordan cites everything from Daft Punk to Kanye Wests as influences, but states there is nobody specific that he can compare his music to. His music is unique and original, which is something rarely seen in the scene today.

The Ready Set is even being recognized by some of today’s most popular musicians. Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz regulary replies (“tweets” or “@replies” for those needing specifics) to postings Jordan has made via Twitter.

The Ready Set has also just recently wrapped up a US tour with Boys Like Girls and NeverShoutNever!, which was Witzigreuter’s first nationwide tour.

If that isn’t enough, The Ready Set has a pretty heavy touring schedule for the remainder of the year. In less than a week Jordan and his crew will set out a month-long US tour with The Color Fred and The Scene Aesthetic, the first date taking place at Buffalo’s own Xtreme Wheelz Skatepark on August 14 and ends in Nashville, Tennessee on September 5. After the completion of that tour, The Ready Set will do a short tour with Mercy Mercedes and Stereo Skyline before heading out with Brokencyde, Kill Paradise and Watchout! There’s Ghosts from the beginning of October to the end of November.

Needless to say, The Ready Set is already making quite a name for themselves. I suspect big, big things from this young musician. Mark my words.

      LIGHTS

Lights PoxleitnerIn today’s scene, its fairly difficult to make your band stand out and leave a lasting impression that’ll stay with a listener/viewer upon their first listen and speaking first handedly, I did that with Lights. I heard her music and liked it, however it wasn’t something that REALLY caught my attention. –Boy was I wrong for leaving this gem on the back burner.

While I was conquering my Warped Tour extravaganza this summer, (I attend 3-10 dates of the tour every summer), I was rekindled with my love affair of the music of Lights.

Lights Poxleitner (born Valerie Poxleitner) is a singer-songwriter from Toronto, Canada. She is best known for her unique sythesized pop-jams such as “Drive My Soul” and “February Air” from her 2008 Doghouse Records debut EP.

In today’s music world, Lights is a revitalizing breath of fresh air. Her synthesized compositions are written mostly in her bedroom and consist of upbeat melodies, quirky fun-filled elements and techniques that sound like they belong in space. When asked about her writing, she has stated, “When I write songs I think about how my music makes people feel, and I hope that when it goes into your ears you feel happy.” and “If my music could be drawn I would picture it like a comic, with simple border lines and bright colors. On first glance there is a nice composition, but upon closer inspection there is a deeper story.”

Lights has already toured throughout Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. She’s toured with artists such as Copeland, Lydia and Lovedrug. Lights also performed at two dates of the 2008 Vans Warped Tour as well as hit the road with Boys Like Girls and Buffalo’s Cute Is What We Aim For on the 2008 Verizon Wireless Campus Invasion Tour.

Lights got her break when her songs were chosen to be featured in Old Navy commercial campaigns nationwide. She won her first Juno for New Artist of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards. Lights won indie awards in the Favorite Solo Artist and Favorite Single categories during Canadian Music Week in March 2009 in Toronto.

Poxleitner appeared in Ten Second Epic's sophomore album, Hometown, and she was also featured on the soundtrack for the 2008 Canadian film “One Week” starring Joshua Jackson. Lights appears on fellow Canadian rockers, Silverstein’s most recent record A Shipwreck in the Sand in the song "The End". Lights supports the Toronto charity Skate4Cancer, and has recorded a song called "Year of the Cure" for their use.

Lights has just recently wrapped up her run on this year’s Vans Warped Tour and is gearing up for a smallg with Keane in September. Lights will release her debut full length album, The Listening via Doghouse Records on September 22, 2009.

Ironically enough, September 22 is also my 23rd birthday. So, for all you people out there who are taking notes...

    • From: MyBuffaloDotCom
    • Description:

Ingrid photos 1.jpgIngrid Michaelson, who topped the iTunes album charts last August, will headline the 2010 Buffalo Place Thursday at the Square concert tonight.  Fresh off her performance at the Bonnaroo Festival, Michaelson will perform hits from her famed album "Everybody," including recent favorite "Maybe."  Expect to hear her most popular tracks - "The Way I Am" off her 2007 album "Girls and Boys," which may sound familiar from an Old Navy commercial, and "Keep Breathing," which featured on the season finale of Grey's Anatomy the same year.  Can Ingrid live up to the standard set by Alejandro Escovedo last Thursday?  We think so, but we suggest that you see it in person, not only because she's arguably the most attractive woman named Ingrid in the world, but because Buffalo.com will be there to snap your photo (and provide free concession tickets for some of you lucky devils - but only if you smile for the camera).

  • A little help from an elderly A little help from an elderly couple

    • From: Bride082011
    • Description:

Since it was winter break and I had the day off of school, I decided to stop into David's Bridal yesterday. Afterall, I did have a $50 gift ceritificate that I won at the Walden Galleria Bridal Show (so I think my trip was justified). I did do a little research before going in there, since I have noticed the lack of customer assistance if you go in without an appointment.

I decided to buy my bridal shoes. Since I already know what kind of dress I am looking for, I thought this would be the next best thing to purchase. I set my eyes on these:David's Bridal Makenzie ShoeThis is the Makenzie shoe. Not only were they open-toed, but they were dyeable. I haven't decided it I want to dye the yet, but is only an extra $3.00 at David's Bridal. The description said that they have a 3 3/4" heel. Hmm. I love them, but I don't think that this would be comfortable to wear throughout the whole day. But, that is why I was going to try the on.

When I arrived at David's Bridal, the shoes were in no particular order. After searching through the mounds of shoes, I was only able to find one pair of the Makenzie's in my size...the sample one. This was a downer for me, but if I really loved them, I could also get them from another store.

As I was searching through the boxes, I found another pair that I may also be interested in:

David's Bridal Martina ShoeThis is the Martina. They were pretty similar, with the open-toe, dyeable qualities, and decoration in the front. This shoe's heel was only 2 1/2". Jackpot. Now I just needed to try them on. While I was at David's Bridal, I met an older lady who happened to be shopping for her 50th wedding anniversary celebration. She gave me some opinions about the shoes, and advice on a long-lasting marriage. So what pair did I choose?

The Martina. This shoe offered more support, especially for dancing, and had a thicker heel than the Makenzie. The heel really mattered to me, since our wedding will be taking place outside, in the grass, so I definitely did not want to be sinking into the grass. Another reason for choosing Martina was that I plan on changing into some Old Navy flip flops, and they have a 2" wedge, so they will be similiar in height (so I won't get the bottom of my dress dirty!)

      Old Navy Wedge Flip Flops

I think that Martina and I will become good friends over the next 18 months!

    • Description:

This years Fall colors are dark.  Black, Navy, Charcoal Gray are Chic.

Here's some useful tips on going Fashionable on a shoesting budget.

      1) Paint it Black:  Don't have alot of black or yours is faded?  Save yourself some cash and dye it yourself with an easy 1-2-3 project.  Here's a link to how to cold waqter dye your own clothes:

      http://diyfashion.about.com/od/dyingandscreenprinting/ss/DyeClothes.htm

      2) Go Black Belt! No I don't mean take up Karate.  Add a black belt to any outfit to accent your waistline.

      3) Button UP!   I don't mean to keep warm.  Add a few LARGE buttons to a sweater, jacket, to add accent pieces

      4) Add a jacket:  No not for outdoors.  I mean dust off a suit jacket or blazer and toss with a blouse or nice pants.  Add your beads and you've got the look!

      5) Add a Scarf:  What are you kidding?  Who doesn't wear a scarf in Buffalo?  This year we've seen all sorts of scarves go down the runway.  Both solid and thick stripes are cool.

      6) Add some Bling:  By buying some cheap costome jewelry at a thrift store you can dress up any outfit.  BUT you're not going to wear that necklace or bracelet!  Take it apart and use large beads to accesorize a plain shirt.  Especially around the collar.

      7) Stiped Tights:  If you like to sew and have old clothes here's your calling:  You can use sleeves from old shirts slice up and resew together alternating colors to make some funky looking tights that are in style this year.

  • Young Woman's Great Lakes adve Young Woman's Great Lakes adventure -Elaine Brown

    • From: rsvp1
    • Description:
It's 1943. I'm 19 years old - I've worked one year at Auto-Owner's Insurance Co. - my first job right out of high school. Mary Miller, my co-worker, and I were "tripping the light fantastic" - both farm girls, a must for a car which Mary had.

We had been to dances - big bands - Tommy Dorsey to name one. We were looking for adventure - wanted to "get out of town," see new things, do new things.

Not only did we plan to get "outta" town but out of the state! Must have read or heard about the lake ships/boats that went from Detroit all the way to Buffalo and, most exciting, Niagara Falls! - they also left from Cleveland.

This trip was "the thing to do," a good way to visit Niagara Falls, NY and Canada. So, Mary and I made our plans and off we went, all the way down to Detroit and the Detroit River. That trip from our town of Howell, Michigan, was memorable because it seemed such a long ways to Detroit (probably 50 miles) - a world away from our small town. Then, when we saw that huge, beautiful boat, to us, as big as an ocean liner, well, we looked in awe - it was so beautiful I just caught my breath.

Up the gangplank we went, feeling really as if we were indeed set for that great adventure movie stars have. I read about it in my movie mags. Our outfits were 1942 fashion - a knee-high skirt with pleats, a tuck in blouse(oh, to be able to wear that now) and saddle shoes with anklets. We looked "snazzy." To get to our tiny, and I do mean tiny, stateroom, we were instructed which hallway to take - soft lights, plush carpeting - oh, what luxury. Our stateroom had just enough room to turnaround and Mary and I bumped fannies several times but finally left to explore. My memory, 64 years ago y'know, is a little hazy but - I can still see the dining room, not unlike a cruise ship - gleaming silverware and glasses on a sparkling white tablecloth.

Even then I was more interested in the food than anything else - until - mary and I went out on the deck and leaning nonchalantly over the rail were two of the most handsome men - one blond and fair and the other tall, dark and handsome. The fair one had only one arm - a vet, we presumed (we were right) - well, they looked at us, kind of out of the corner of their eyes - I don't know who said "hello" first (no "hi" back then) but we decided, mary and I, to see what they were looking at. Oh, the water. You, the reader, know that we did get together - dinner, dancing, and I do remember the moonlight on the water, shimmering, but truly, I do not remember exchanging kisses - nowadays, women would have lassoed him and had him in his stateroom before you could say "scat."

We parted ways at Buffalo and we checked into our beautiful hotel. Then, out into the streets - Buffalo was a beautiful city with historic buildings - lots of traffic - to Mary and I, a huge bustling metropolis - like New York City. We scoped out the restaurants (me again), took our cameras, took a few pictures on steps of, I think, the big courthouse down by the Bisons' ball field, what a splendid building - others were photographing it, too - in fact, two British sailors who came up to us and became friendly with us. We four set off to sightsee some more and decided we'd go to Niagara Falls that night on what was called the "Old High Speed" - a train that raced right straight to the Falls - so fast that as we rode that night, just flashes of lighted windows in homes - the speed was exhilarating and took no time - going by some plants, maybe Hooker, Olin, etc.

Downtown Niagara Falls - what a sight - got off at that beautiful railroad station and all the passengers scattered - the four of us finally partnered up - me with Arthur (cute - tall, curly blond hair) - cute uniforms - American Navy was in town, too, along with soldiers - don't forget this was wartime - the bars were overflowing - as were the streets - I barely remember any of them - I do seem to remember a lot of gambling going on and the street cars - it was so exciting.

Now, lest you think we picked up those sailors - and they picked us up - girls just didn't do that in those days.

This is one of the nicest memories anyone could have - the friendship of those two British sailors continued with their visit to my hometown. Arthur , mine, professed his love for me but I had to send him off (I can still see the bus station) with no hope as my heart belonged to another.

Bill, Mary's, also same story - except he cared so much for my mom and dad and the farm - the tractor, horses, that he came back to visit on his next leave.

The war ended, my parents had to give up farming due to his rheumatic fever, and they moved down to Farmington, Michigan, where I had grown up til 18 years of age.

Bill, though, kept in touch and his sister and family came from Glasgow, Scotland and stayed with them.

I had married and lived here in Niagara Falls, and in, I believe, 1969, Bill and his family stopped to see us when we lived on River Road in Wheatfield. My husband was less than pleased - suppose he thought an old boyfriend. We really had nothing to say to each other after all those wartime years but he voiced his thanks that my mom and dad made a sailor far from home, for a time, anyway, and forget he would soon be back in battle again. Never a word of Arthur, we both wondered if he made it through - so many didn't in WWII - wasn't that the war that was going to end all wars?

PS. Ironically, God's plan, whatever you want to call it - I prefer God's plan - where we lived was some hundreds of yards from the old High Speed tracks, and where Mary, Bill, Arthur and I rode to Niagara Falls - perhaps the lights I saw - were homes not far from where we lived.

So sad they discontinued those lake boats and the Old High Speed train - would work today, fuel-efficiently!

  • "From Dawn until Dusk" - ficti "From Dawn until Dusk" - fiction by Elaine Brown

    • From: rsvp1
    • Description:
I was thinking of days gone by when I decided to become a person of deep convictions. On the surface to my peers, my persona was a happy, smiling face - probably the thought was, "this girl doesn't know enough to come out of the rain" - I do so, thank you very much, as rain can play havoc with one's hair so why would I do that.

My one pride then was I did have the courage of my convictions - when WWII came I was 18 and my tears at my brother's leaving to fight, maybe never to return, led me to the local aircraft factory where I became a riveter, welder, go-fer and a sex symbol. I look very fetching in my snood, my cover-alls; I cinched in the waist with this wide belt with the American flag buckle, so my bust was noticable - very much so. Of course, the fact that my 'fanny' was even more noticable - quite wide, so even more noticable - so my dear friend Olive told me. Did't stop me, tho' - I only tightened the belt more. Someone really special was noticing - handsome with his dark curly hair, so tall, broad shoulders and the bluest eyes - piercing they were and when they met mine, he smiled and the crinkles spread, making his eyes dance.

I caught my breath - a brief hello and we passed each other - neither turned and it was over.

Of course, my fast-beating heart was suffocating me as I tried to continue my job. The P-41 plane had to be ready by weekend so daydreaming was out. Time passed - oh, 3 or 4 days, and I was sitting on the porch swing still in my work clothes when up the street walks this man who caused my heart palpitations, but in a US Navy uniform?

He turned up my walk and as my heart punded, he stood before me - "my name is John Henry - I know your name - so hi." Put out his hand and I took it and oh, the electric shock - I had been dreaming of him from dusk to dawn and here he was. He sat beside me and I learned he knew my brothers - in fact had trained with one in Rhode Island. He was in the plant just to say hi to old friends, never dreaming there would be so many women there and how courageous we were to leaves the home fires to help out in time of war.

We talked for hours then he looked at his watch and askedif I would write him. Of course I would, says I. As he turned to go down the steps, I called his name. "John?" I stopped and he said "Yes, next time I'm on leave, I'll be here - dinner, a movie, ok?" I was so thrilled and life was good.

Time passed - planes were built, men died, more funerals in our town, the VA hospital asking for volunteers, so many wounded. I decided I must do more so signed up at the VA. It was heartbreaking to see these brave men, their bodies and minds broken, looking to nurses, and volunteers, with eyes nearly blank with the memories of their terrible experiences that forever changed their lives. I am sorry to say, there were actually nurses who had no patience with some of the wounded who were trying to walk again. I decided there was no way I was going to stand by and watch this mistreatment in addition to their pain.

One soldier had tears coursing down his cheeks as Nurse "Ratchet" jerked him upright and said, "Now, you walk!" I knew right then, if I had courage of my convictions, I would stand up toher and have her removed. I walked over to her and told her she was a mean, mean person and if she didn't stop I would report her. She didn't and I did - she was disciplined and removed to another floor where she could do no harm - a health worker's creed - "do no harm."

I went to the ambulance this day to help unload the wounded - as you readers suspect, John was one of the wounded. His head bandaged, an arm and a leg in a cast. His eyes, filled with pain, met mine - "Elaine!"as I said "John!" - as I held him his tears rolled freely - in his bed later, we talked, talked, talked.

All went well, and to this day I still fight for what I believe and have done so and come out a winner - can't ask for more than that.

  • Lights In Buffalo Lights In Buffalo

    • From: ro80bert
    • Description:

Canadian singer/songwriter and native, Valerie Poxleitner, otherwise known simply as Lights, is busy touring both Canada and United States in support of her self-titled EP. Lights is best known for her hit single, "Drive My Soul", which is still receiving airplay on both sides of the border.

Lights, who will be arriving in Buffalo this Monday, is one of the many female artists currently dominating the music scene. "Bjork, for example, has inspired me big time," she said in a recent interview. " She has been in the industry for such a long time and is not limited or has any boundaries to what she does."

Q: Your parents had a lot to do with your success. Would you agree?

A: Absolutely! They gave me my foundation in music and gave me the perfect environment to hone in on everything I have. They allowed me to do a lot of the things I needed to do. They listened to me playing and recording my music until three in the morning. I definitely wouldn't be able to do it if it wasn't for them.

Q: Your EP features some of your own artwork.

I always loved to draw. I drew before I did music. Music is the one that kind of took off. For me, everything audio has a visual. It's just another way to express the visual side so it gets the whole picture across to people, so they can fully understand the piece of art, itself. I'm still working on being an illustrator, though.

Q: Your song, "Drive My Soul" was featured in 1998's Old Navy commercials. How did you feel about that?

I've been kind of avoiding radio airplay. We are trying to push this organically. I liked the Old Navy commercials because there is no blatant confirmation of who the artist was. I thought it was pretty cool because it was a background component to a really elegant set of episodes that they put as ad campaigns. In order to find it out who the artist was, the public had to do a little research. In that way there is a sense of discovery that comes along with it.

Q: When can we expect a full length album?

Yes! The record is pretty much done. I'm hoping for August or September of this year for the full length and I'm really proud of it. I've also done a collaboration with an established indie Canadian band that will be featured on the new album as well. So look for it later this year.

I should have been a Wave. I planned on it when I graduated from high school. I went down and filled out the forms. They kept saying "you belong in the Air Force." But I loved the Navy hat and I could swim very well.

In between time my best friend worked for the telephone company as an operator. She said I could do it. So I marched up to Portage Road office and took the test. My mother had to sign for me to join. She was skeptical about me going. So in the end I became an operator at the telephone company, which surprised me. Even after getting married and having a baby, I still worked at it. Finally I went to work for St. Mary's Hospital for 34 years, where I met many friends. When I think about how I could have left good old Niagara Falls and my family - the Navy wasn't for me.

So there you are. Should've, could've and didn't became my life.

  • Ingrid Michaelson to perform a Ingrid Michaelson to perform at Thursday at the Square tomorrow

    • From: MyBuffaloDotCom
    • Description:

So, on August 26th, 2009, who do you think earned the top album sold on iTunes?  Was it Kings of Leon with "Only By the Night?"  How about "Breakthrough" by Colbie Caillat?  Erroneous, on both counts.

Ingrid Michaelson, who topped the chart last August, will take the Lafayette Square stage this Thursday, fresh off her performance alongside Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, and Kings of Leon at Tennessee's Bonnaroo Festival.

Michaelson will perform hits from her famed album on iTunes, "Everybody," including recent favorite "Maybe."  Expect to hear her most popular tracks - "The Way I Am" off her 2007 album "Girls and Boys," which may sound familiar from an Old Navy commercial, and "Keep Breathing," which featured on the season finale of Grey's Anatomy the same year.

Bonnaroo.com inquired about the meaning behind Michaelson's album; the New York based artist said, "[The album is] almost a loss of innocence. I’m 29 years old and I shouldn’t worry if my mom and dad know that I kissed a boy from listening to one of my songs, but I remember on my first album I was like, 'Can I say that?'"  You can say it, Ingrid, you can say it.

Her sound is described as "smart, pensive, yet poppy."  Who knew that "poppy" and "smart" weren't mutually exclusive?  Ingrid must be a real pioneer.

Can Michaelson live up to the standard set by Tift Merritt and Alejandro Escovedo last Thursday?  We think so, but we suggest that you see it in person, not only because she's arguably the most attractive woman named Ingrid in the world, but because Buffalo.com will be there to snap your photo (and provide concession tickets!).
