  • WNY: A Hotbed of Talent for Me WNY: A Hotbed of Talent for Men’s Volleyball

    • From: EricCity
    • Description:

Over the past few years, Western New York has produced a number of men’s collegiate volleyball players, some of whom have earned national awards and titles.

“For 20-plus years, I and many of my WNY friends, coaches and players have been very aware of the wealth of talent that we have produced from the WNY area,” said Robert Pierce, director of the Eden volleyball club.  “We have as many boys playing club and looking to play in college as we have ever had.”

Men’s Division I (DI) collegiate volleyball is made up of three conferences: the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA), Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA), and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Making up these three DI conferences are 23 colleges and universities, which seems minuscule compared to the 317 DI women’s programs.

Volleyball has historically been associated with women.  However, in recent years the sport has been gaining popularity with men, as well. It might be a Title IX issue, but each year a few men’s programs are being added throughout the country.

Despite the lack of availability of men’s programs, Wester New York has found great success for its athletes. During the 2010 collegiate season, 13 men at eight different colleges and universities from the WNY area played D1 intercollegiate volleyball. These 13 men include:

      • John Klanac (Ohio State University, Orchard Park High School)
      • Pat Schwagler (Princeton University, Orchard Park High School)
      • Dale Freier (Ohio State University, Lancaster High School)
      • Jared Pincoski (Loyola (Chicago) University, Orchard Park High School)
      • Derek Jansma (Harvard University, Lancaster High School)
      • Jonathan Meyer (Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne, Eden High School)
      • Tom Comfort (Penn State University, Orchard Park High School)
      • Mike Stefani (Ohio State University, Orchard Park High School)
      • Pete Freyer (Saint Francis University Pa., Orchard Park High School)
      • Phil Peterson (Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne, Frontier High School)
      • Joe Norton (George Mason University, Eden High School)
      • Max Lipsitz (Penn State University, Williamsville North High School)
      • Eric Syty (Saint Francis University (Pa.), Clarence High School)

One standout among the 13 men is Max Lipsitz—a native of Williamsville. Lipsitz was named to the First Team All-EIVA during each of his four years at Penn State.  He also earned American Volleyball Coaches Association Second Team All-American honors in 2008, was named an AVCA First Team All-American in 2009 and 2010, and was selected to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team in 2008 and 2010. If that is not enough, Lipsitz was also the 2010 EIVA Uvaldo Acosta Player of the Year.

Lipsitz was even a part of the men’s U.S. Junior National Team during the summer of 2007.

Although the majority of his honors have come on the court, Lipsitz claimed a spot on ESPN The Magazine’s Second Team Academic All-American list in 2008.

Lipsitz was not the only athlete from WNY who took a title at the end of the 2010 season; Pat Schwagler earned one as well. Although he may not have the same resume as Lipsitz, Schwagler still has three years left in his college career at Princeton.  Schwagler, an Orchard Park native, received the EIVA Newcomer of the Year award for his efforts with the Tigers.

“Being EIVA Newcomer of the Year has been an awesome experience. When I first heard about it I couldn't believe it – there were some pretty good freshman in the league this year, so this was an honor,” Schwagler said.

WNY has even produced a National Player of the Year. Matt Anderson (West Seneca) who left Penn State University after his 2008 season, was part of the NCAA National Championship team and played his first professional years overseas in Korea.

Anderson who now plays in Italy is also a member of the U.S. national team and is hoping to guide them to a successful 2012 Olympic campaign.

One factor that may lead to such great talent coming out of WNY is the combination of year-round play and great club teams. Unlike most states, New York’s high school volleyball season takes place during the fall. This allows players to play all fall, then in the winter; club season begins and runs through most of summer.

In other states, such as Pennsylvania, men’s volleyball is a spring sport in high school, leaving fall as an off-season because the club season still takes place during the winter and summer months.

“I think that the single biggest factor in the increase of talent in WNY is the existence of outstanding club programs in our area - Panther, Southtowns, Power Station, and especially Eden give kids a chance to play year-round and compete with other great players from around the country,” said Kevin Starr coach of the Clarence High School men’s varsity team.  “Guys like Walt Stefani, Robert Pierce, and Tom Weislo deserve the most credit for all that they've done to help WNY kids grow as players.”

So with all this talent coming out of WNY, why isn’t there a local university where these players can play? Pierce, Schwagler, and Starr all agree that the University at Buffalo would benefit greatly by having a D1 men’s volleyball team. Pierce says that UB has the right “administrative direction” and thinks that a men’s team would also benefit the women’s program.

By adding a men’s team UB would be in the spotlight nationally, drawing more attention to both the school and its athletics programs – including women’s volleyball.

Another benefit from a player standpoint is that playing close to home allows family and friends to see the athletes in action more than once or twice a year.

Just beyond D1 is D3, which is nothing short of another exciting WNY-filled division.

With local schools like Medaille College, whose 2010 roster was made up of 13 Western New Yorkers out of 14 players; and D’Youville College who had 6 of its 12 players representing WNY, it is clear that the local high schools are continuing to produce a wide range of talent.

Then there are the D3 schools outside the WNY area that host one or more Western New Yorker(s) like: New York University, Juniata College (Huntingdon, Pa.), Springfield College (Springfield, Mass.), Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, NJ) and Nazareth College (Rochester, NY).

Helping the Violets of NYU is Jeffrey Lewis, a native of Hamburg who has been with the team for two seasons now.

Flying with the Eagles at Juniata College is Charlie Gomez, who joined the team in 2009 after graduating from Amherst Central high school.

Representing WNY for the 2010 D3 National Champion Springfield College is Jeff Gutmann (Maryvale) who plays outside hitter.

Heading into his senior year, Tim Karl (Clarence)  is looking forward to playing a big role for Stevens Tech in the upcoming 2011 season.

Rounding out the list is Nazareth College, who may not be as big as the other schools, but is gaining more and more recognition every year. The Western New Yorkers making up the Golden Flyers' roster are: Chris Mendez (Canisius), Will Siwy (Lake Shore), Dan Miranda (Sweet Home) and Hans Schroeder (Kenmore West).

Among those four individuals is one in particular. Schroeder, who has been a big asset the past three years was recently deemed a “player to watch in 2011” by Volleyball Magazine.

Rounding out the success of volleyball in WNY is a look at the recent 2010 Empire State Games, where both the “open” and “scholastic” men’s team took home the gold medal. This proves to the state that WNY really is a hotbed for men’s volleyball.

It’s clear that WNY has the resources to become a collegiate volleyball powerhouse, but by funneling the big names away, the players are soon forgotten and volleyball remains in the high schools and clubs.

Although men’s volleyball may not be big in many parts of the country, there is no doubt that in WNY it is a sport on the rise.

  • Global Networking Mixers launc Global Networking Mixers launch party hits Chippewa on Thursday

    • From: BTester
    • Description:

The momentum behind the Global Networking Mixers launch party on Thursday April 1, 2010 at the new Barcelona on Pearl - Night Club and Tapas bar is steadily growing. The mixers are intended as a business networking arena meant to join business people (and anyone who wants to expand their contact base) across a wide variety of ethnic, social, economic and linguistic backgrounds. Several local businesses are embracing the new idea:

According to Global’s Founder, Daryl Hiro H. “The mixers differ from others currently running as they seek to direct people from all business sectors of Western New York / Niagara Frontier to Downtown to utilize business networking as an economical and efficient method to attract more business to the area, and Buffalo in particular. We want to get interested parties to actually meet each other”.

Mr. Hiro saw a need to narrow the perceived socio-economic gaps in Buffalo and the surrounding area in order to get all hands possible to the task of reviving the local economies.

A recent arrival in Buffalo, Mr.Hiro hails from California and Hawai’I but has worked abroad in Japan, Mexico and has consulted in Europe during the 10 years he spent there. He consults local businesses in marketing and Internet promotion.

“Buffalo, Niagara Falls and the ‘Canadian Crescent’ of cities in Southern Ontario, Canada is ground zero for the initiation of the project”, notes, Mr. Hiro. “We want an affordable and easy way for anyone who is serious about wooing more business, reducing overhead though partnerships or just making new business contacts across a wider spectrum of interest groups to have an area to do so.”

The core group of companies supporting the mixers are:
      · Global Networking Mixers – www.stuckontravel.org/global
      · Barcelona on Pearl (Night club and bar – Downtown Buffalo)
      · El Buen Amigo (a fair trade store specializing in arts and crafts from Latin America) Elmwood
      Village www.elbuenamigo.org
      · Frontier Liquor (an event planning, discount beverage and ice provider) Grant Street, Buffalo
      www.frontierbuffalo.com
      · Above & Beyond Event Planners, LLC – (Event planning) www.ABEventPlanning.com
      · Molino’s Pizza ( Pizzaria celebrating 50 years in Kaisertown Buffalo)

Mr. Hiro notes that these types of mixers are very popular in the West.

“The tendencies to avoid” he says, “are cliquish groups that form where friends only talk among friends, when only sales people to attend to push their agendas and when only one demographic attends.”

Mr. Hiro notes, “Like we said on the Website…people should strive to meet others and introduce
themselves by saying something like: ‘Hi, I’m Fred Flintstone...I work at the quarry, how can I help you to get more customers or to lower your operating costs?’”

This kind of networking, where attendees puts the other person’s interests first, can prove difficult at first for eager salespeople who are antsy to deliver a pitch. However—Hiro maintains—it can deliver better results for both parties involved.

“Imagine a realtor or insurance salesman came up to you saying the same thing, it would be hard not to be impressed and / or crack a smile.”

Provided these go well, the Global Networking Mixers will be looking at other strategically-located cities to collaborate. Those interested in their business becoming a partner / sponsor, or having a stand at the mixers, is encouraged to contact Global Networking Mixers directly by phone at: (+1) 716 289 9036.

  • Consolidation or Duplication Consolidation or Duplication

    • From: prichards
    • Description:

Consolidation or duplication?  Do you remember back a few years ago when A certain candidate for County Executive (whom I shall not name) announced his desire to consolidate services provided by cities, towns, and villages with the county?  I remember clearly how the governments of the cities, towns, and villages resisted his approach to streamlining the delivery of services.  If I could have had a chance I would have asked him what else he expected.  Realistically, that idea was doomed from the start, regardless of the support it may have garnered from you and me.  The key element, overlooked by he who must not be named, is ego.  Each of the leaders of the municipal governments could not give up control because of their ego.  I think you know who had the right concept but the wrong idea of implementation.  Hence, the question, consolidation or duplication?

For the sake of discussion and example I have picked 3 towns and 3 villages.  The towns are Elma, Aurora, and Hamburg, along with the villages of Aurora, Blasdell, and Hamburg. I have tried to research this for accuracy but would not stake my life on the statements of others as being totally accurate. I must say I was surprised at what I learned, and will now impart this new found knowledge to you.

I start with the town and village of Aurora. Much to my surprise, I learned that the Village provides all of the police services for both.  The dispatch center is located in the Village hall as are the police department offices.  The Town pays the Village for the services of the police. I found that interesting because I expected the opposite strictly based on area. The Village and Town also share Fire protection from the volunteer company in the Village.  West Falls (which is in the Town of Aurora) provides fire and emergency coverage in their area of the town, and Wales Center (which is not part of the Town) provides those services in the Town near their border. I mention the fire services only because of the cooperation between towns and districts.  All these departments are volunteer, but all of them are paid by the towns and villages they protect for the service they provide.  To continue, the school system in Aurora covers the Town and Village and I assume it includes West Falls.

On to Elma.  The Town of Elma has no police force but contracts with the Erie County Sheriff’s Department for police services.  The NY State police also have a presence there but I have no knowledge of compensation for services.  The Town has no school district perse, but has combined with Marilla  and Wales to form the Iroquois District.  As for emergency services, the Town has 4 volunteer fire departments.  In alphabetic order, they are: Blossom, Elma, Jamison Road, and Spring Brook.  They all receive compensation from the Town for their service but it is unclear as to their dispatch.  All 4 along with the 2 Aurora companies and (again alphabetically) Holand, Marilla, South Wales, and Wales Center companies are dispatched by the Village of Aurora.  I assume there is some compensation for this service from the towns.

The towns and village mentioned are good examples of services that are not being duplicated.  I am sure at some time in the past there was a consolidation but when that took place could only be found with time and research.  The point is, there is a savings to these communities because there is not a duplication of services.  Also, it works very well.

Which brings us to the Town of Hamburg and the Villages of Blasdell and Hamburg.  The Town has the villages of Blasdell and Hamburg within its borders. I will start with the Village of Blasdell.  The Village has its own police department of a sort.  As I understand it there are 1 or 2 cars marked as Village of Blasdell and only 2 officers dedicated to the Village.  These numbers could be incorrect as research was difficult. These cars and officers belong to the Town of Hamburg police department.  I assume there is some contractual agreement to facilitate this.  The Town backs up and patrols as needed also.  The Village is a part of the Frontier School District as is the Town of Hamburg.

On to the Village of Hamburg.  Everything here is separate with the exception of police dispatch.  The Village maintains its own police force and fleet of cars.  The village has its own school district.  Although it has not been discussed prior to this point, I assume the Village also has its own department of works.  The only service not directly provided by the Village is police dispatch as mentioned before.  Duplication of services and wasting tax dollars is the norm here. At this point I must say that I am not picking on Hamburg. I only use them as an example because I have limited knowledge of the situation.  I am sure there are many other examples in this state, but like a friend of mine says “I don’t know dat”.

The point is that we can not hope to find cooperation on a county or state level when we can’t even find it where towns have a village within their borders.  Ego prevents them from seeing the potential for tax savings.  My father had a saying about people with no vision.  “They can’t see the forest for the trees”. I never understood that until I was much older.  Perhaps if he would have said, when you can’t see the forest for the trees, step back, I would have understood. It’s the same for duplicating services.  Until the leaders in the towns and villages can see past their egos we can not hope to find relief. Until the towns and villages lead the way we can not hope for the counties or the State to follow. Like I said at the start.  Good concept, wrong approach to implementation.   The first step is the hardest and it is up to you and me to take it.  We have the power. If only we could learn to use it.

I’m Paul Richards and that’s all I’m saying.

  • Castellani Exhibitions Celebat Castellani Exhibitions Celebate Life on the Farm

    • From: sclements
    • Description:

To Market: Changing Strategies for Family Farming on the Niagara Frontier

Farmers cannot survive unless people buy what they produce. The heart of this exhibition will focus on the "art" of farm marketing: architecture, signage, and display techniques that encourage people to stop, look and purchase. The architecture of farm market stands, the design of signage, and the techniques of display are not accidents. They are part of a tradition of marketing passed down, and embellished, through generations of farmers.

The exhibition includes historic photographs, maps, and advertising labels; new photography documenting farm markets currently operating in Erie and NiagaraCounties ; handmade signage suspended from the gallery's ceiling; and family inter-actives. " To Market"is designed for general audiences, educators, and students, with the hope that this fresh way of looking at farm markets will help to increase support for local growers.

Rural America: Remembering the Family Farm, Prints from the Collection of Steven Schmidt

This exhibitionprovides visitors with an historical look at the evolution of the family farm. Depicting elements of invention, architecture, and production, artists have captured the American spirit through the print medium. A hard day's work and community solidarity for the greater good create nostalgia for simpler times.

In generations past, farming communities across the United States provided a bountiful cornucopia including fruits, vegetables, grain, and cotton for textile manufacturing. America's bread basket reached far and wide, but was also central to local communities for employment , social connection, and community building. These images of the American farm evoke memories that cross generational boundaries. Centuries of regional family farming communities across the country symbolize the honor of America, the ingenuity of her people, and plentiful natural resources of rich soil and favorable climates.

These exhibitions hav been made possible by generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets-Agritourism Initiative, with additional support from an anonymous foundation.

Both exhibitions open Friday, October 5, 2007 with a reception from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m., and run through January 13, 2008. The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. For more information, please call 716-286-8200.
