    May 1st of this year, I checked out a new band called Breakaway. They comprised a good chunk of the version of Hit N Run, who I reviewed back in February. 

     

    Since I’ve been publishing reviews, I have seen many bands. I have not reviewed all of them in print.  Being a little more seasoned now at what’s “out there,” Breakaway has my spider senses tingling. I’m starting to consider myself a musical talent dowser.

     

    I am going to do a comparison, stressing that this is my opinion, and I am entitled to it.  Hit N Run is MySpace, Breakaway is Facebook. If you want to hear streamline popular  songs under a beer tent, by all means go with Hit N Run. I get regular emails from lead singer Mark Valentino, telling how they doubled, tripled and shattered all previous attendance records at every carnival and bar mitzvah they play and although it may be slightly exaggerated, they do pack a house and make for a dancing, happy crowd. They have non-stop energy and keep it full force - and are good to the last drop.

     

    Me, I like the not-so-mainstream. I was never into the 80s hair stuff.

     

    Breakaway’s members are talented frontman Scott Panfil who sings, plays some guitar and keyboard.  Bruce Decker, who plays keys, cowbell, harmonica and backup vocals, Bassist Mike Schill also sings lead on some songs, guitarist Jeff Kocher and Jay “Taz” Kuzara on drums rounds out the lineup.  All the decades of talent brought together without the tensions of Hit N Run, have a light, fun, in-sync feeling of real friends. Down from the clouds and eye to eye.

     

    Taz brought his son, Austin, who is following his ol’ man’s musical tracks. He sat in for Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ and did phenomenally. Got that on video, too. Scott’s dad, Mark, got onstage and whaled out some serious harmonica too.

     

    Gee that makes me think of another great rocker, Michael Hund of Widow Maker. His son, Dylan plays in a great band called Inner Child. And Josh Geercken, Kim’s son, who.. oh I don’t want to sound like a soap opera. But we have so much talent here in music, in art, in food… sometimes you get so wound up in the daily crap you overlook the beauty and creativity this area actually has.

     

    Back to Breakaway.  They do a nice custom-version of CSNY’s  ‘Love the One You’re With’ some Doobie Brothers but a must mention is… Bruce center staged with his harmonica and stoned us all with Magic Dick’s ‘Whammer Jammer’ OMG.  WHAT A JAM.  Beaming throughout, I captured it on video and you can see for yourself.  My Youtube channel is ‘enoughofit7.’  I got a few vids of them.

     

    I want to give a shout out to Striker’s owner Mike Grieble, just cuz he’s a great guy and I love stopping up on Cruise Night and some live music on Fridays. This was Breakaway’s debut at this venue, and I got a decent picture – the place was packed and VERY receptive!

     

    I would also like to credit Taz with TWICE reaching out to do ‘Grab a C.A.N. Fan Challenge,’ food drives that I do for the WNY Food bank.  Breakaway still in fact holds the reins for the band who raised the most food (see all on website http://www.opmusichouse.org/Grab_A_Can.html) and totals 331 pounds of food.

     

    Oh yea, and Taz is also endorsed by REGAL TIP Drum sticks, who are based right here, in Niagara Falls, NY!

     

    If I don’t like something I would rather say nothing than negative things. I never give credit where it is not due nor do I sugar coat anything. If you like your music a little off the beaten path, loud, continual, full and fun, Breakaway is for you.
